When you go to a gig, are you impressed only by what you
hear or does the visual element play an important role.

Would a Laptop artist playing the best sounds you ever heard
but sitting in the corner looking moody and lifeless,
impress you as much as someone with great stage presence,
but not quite as good a sound?

when you are at a live show, you'd normally expect more show
than just when listening to the cd.. Ralph Myerz have quite
a good stageshow, but that's not only a guy with a computer,
though.

Elektrofant, who are just two guys with lots of hardware
created quite a show as well, in a way.. they were dressed
up in doctor/operation-gear.

xploding plastix are great live! they make you jump, and
they bring along a guitarist and a drummer.

Yeah, Thats what I like to see. The best shows I have seen
are Leftfield And Lemon Jelly. Both acts worked hard,
moving around the stage and using multiple instruments.

when it comes to laptop artists, i only care about sound.
imo its virtually impossible to look interesting while using
a computer.

It doesn't bother me that much, I usually have an awesome
time whether the guy is doing cartwheels on stage or not

yeah. me and the group i'm in are planning on doing some
live shit on a festival here in norway which is called
By:Larm. We're planning on being ready for it when it comes
back to bergen in two-three years.

We will most likely have me on decks/keys/knobs/didjeridoo,
a guy on guitar/bass/mostly anything with strings, a guy on
flute/generally instruments you blow into and a chick on
cello/vocals plus some rotation on certain other instruments
like harmonica, drums, percussion, random noises, vocal.

Whilst it's nice to see that the artist is actually on stage
(not a guarantee that it's not being run off a DAT by any
means, but it makes it slightly less likely) it's not that
important to me to see them or even see them interacting
with the crowd. I suppose it's partly because I don't really
idolise any IDM artists as individuals (even if I have a
huge respect for their music), whereas say, rock kids seem
to genuinely love/worship their musical heroes.

I think well done visuals can also make the world of
difference.

In my opinion.

"when you are at a live show, you'd normally expect more
show than just when listening to the cd.. "

I was slightly dissapointed when I heard squarepushers Ether
set, after hearing the breezeblock set. They were note for
note identical. I think performance should have an element
of interaction and improvisation.

If I went out and performed a set that was 100% prepared I
would feel like a cheat.

yeah.. interaction is cool... like at the Ralph Myerz
concert.. he'd record the audience going "aaaaAAAAAA!" and
use it in the song...

Thats cool. At the end of my last gig we setup a feedback
loop and handed a mic round the crowd, each person made a
small noise until we had built up a 4 bar groove. It was
pretty mental, but everyone enjoyed it.

Yeah, even if you're just extending bits they react well to
or whatever... it shouldn't be a case of it sounding like
you've just hit play on a pre-recorded set (even if that's
not what you're doing)

if you are at an electronic-concert, you're best off
up-front no matter what.

it's cool when they use those small "globe" thingies that
you can hover your hand over to control certain things.

does anyone know what that thing is called?

Air FX or D-Beam

I have a d-beam controller on my sp-808 which gets a cool
"ooooh" noise out of the crowd when used.

Do you "throw signs" into it? :D

You can get cool effects putting a variable rate fan above
those. Sort of a visual LFO.

it's the air fx, I think...

I want one, but I don't know what I'd use it for... maybe
I'd just stand around hovering my hand over it, looking
cool...

Ceri - Cool, might give that fan thing a go lol, Throwing
shapes, using your foot, face.........Depending how much
dutch courage you have, you could even wave your balls over
it.

The Mastah - You should go old school and buy a theremin or
a Rolf harris Stylaphone. Dope if you can get the limited
45 with rolf teaching you how to play.

RDJ did it the best for me: Him on stage and all his mates
drunk/off their head and dancing on stage with him. Best
craic ever. It was like you were invited to their little
private rave..... Cylob dressed up as a banana was sooo off
the wall it was sheer madness.

I find any clips i've seen of Squarepusher twiddling
knobs/playinng bass absoultely thrilling as he really
expresses the songs for me visually even if he'sjust
scrunching up his face.

As for visuals.... Plaids last 2 shows here are great
examples of getting it right with the graphics....
