does music change your attitude towards life?

I'm kind of in an inquisitive mood today, and I have just
been thinking...

Has the music you've listened to throughout your life
changed your attitude towards things?

I grew up listening to the likes of Queen, Jean-Michel
Jarre, Rondo Veneziano, Michael Jackson and stuff.

Then between the ages of about 9 to 12 i didn't really care
much about music.

At 12 I moved to my dad's (my parents divorced in 1993) and
I was subjected to stuff like Extreme, Metallica, Def
Leopard (thanks to my step-mom) and the likes of Prodigy,
Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Aphex Twin, autechre,
Nirvana, Tupac, DMX (the rapper, not Ed DMX!) and things
from sources such as school (I went to a predominantly asian
school in Birmingham, England) and MTV2.

I was thinking....if I hadn't been subjected to the kind of
stuff I have been, my attitude towards
everything.......people, authoritarian figures, life, the
future, the past.......I'm pretty sure that my attitudes
would all be different.

Everything you do more or less changes you.
So yeah, it has changed me.

how do you mean?

both ways?

I think it works both ways

Music can sway you in certain ways, but the way you feel can
also change the way you listen to music

Like, if you're feeling really low, Nice Weather For Ducks
would probably piss you right off. But if you were in a good
mood you'd probably like it

perhaps he means that the music he listens to changes him
and that him changing changes -what- music he chooses to
listen to?
That was/is the case with me anyway.

in music changing moods, I find listening to System Of A
Down is really good for lifting a bad mood

It has all the agression but with a funny undertone. Real
good for making you smile =o)

yes. napalm death changed my attitude towards mainstream
hard rock, aphex changed my attitude towards electronic
music in general, primus changed my attitude towards the
bass. :)

i don't like System Of A Down, my brother likes them
though...

the music that comforts me and lifts my mood the most when
i'm feeling down/depressed is Morcheeba. at least 'Big
Calm', lovely album (i don't have any other ones by them
yet)... =)

Brian Eno is an artist who has changed my attitude towards
life.

music is an integral part of our everyday lives,if it
wouldn't existed it would be really... hmmm, empty, so to
say.
music tends to influence me very random, like one day i'll
listen to rock, the other idm,the other funk or downtempo.

two months ago i was heavily under boc / freescha sound and
thats the most fragile state i was in.
it made me appreciate things that i didn't before and
somehow it also made me a bit far from my friends.

and now...i'm on this crossroad...everthing is jumbled up in
one big shell, but nothing is finding it's way.

Great topic, oscillik.

Uh yeah, I agree with everything everybody's said so
far...sometimes albums like SAWII and Eno's works make me
want to go about not talking to anyone for days.

And albums like Orbital's In-Sides (Snivilisation is playing
atm) and the RDJ Album make me really happy to be alive.

Albums definitely change my attitude towards life. For sure.

if one piece of music can really make you feel happy, sad or
even cry then i wouldn't see music as just MUSIC,but more
like an universal language or even an emotional trigger that
works different on each individual.

"I wanted to write joyfull music, music that makes people
feel good, music that helps and heals, because i believe that
music is a god's voice"

Brian Wilson

Not really. My life affects the music I listen to, but not
really vice versa. I extracted the same feelings from Green
Day and Metallica as I do from the weird shit I listen to
now. Different time periods, different tastes, same results.
Or maybe I'm just not thinking on your wavelength.

BoC helped me not to forget my love of the countryside (in
my late teens my interest in technology made me a lot more
urban), but other than that, it tends to be I select music
that I can relate to at a particular time in my life/mood
I'm in. Listening to drum and bass when I'm lethargic
doesn't make me more active, just like listening to ambient
when I'm hyper doens't really calm me down. My life changes
my music, not really the other way around.

this is an absurdly complicated question to answer.

i spend several hours each day listening to music -- and
usually at least an hour or every two days 'just' listening
to music -- so it would be utterly ridiculous of me to say
it doesn't influence me in a myriad of different ways. on
the other hand, i think it's pretentious to assume it's
something definite -- like "i worship satan because i listen
to geogaddi" or something. the only definite thing i can say
is autechre taught me to listen closely to random (not that
autechre is random, okay!) noises around me, to pay
attention to atmosphere. i guess eno would've done that to a
lot of (older) people but by the time i discovered him his
ideas have been copied endlessly.

If you listen to The Cure and Morissey all the time, you're
going to be sad and think life is all pain, suffering and
break-ups. If you listen to The Bug, you're going to think
girls are hot when they dance. If you listen to
Squarepusher, you're going to think you're cool. Sad, horny,
cool. life, General Gravy.

This is a great topic, I think that the music you are
exposed to when you are younger has an effect on your
musical tastes as you get older. So you generally
(subconciously vs conciously?) equate different emotions and
feelings with different harmony, rhythms and beats. This
might not apply to everyone but if you look at the music
that people listen to and ask them what sort of music they
were exposed to when they were younger, it can get
interesting. My mother and to some respects my father
listened to 80's New Wave (cure, smiths, early ministry,
depeche mode etc), this has had an effect on what I like and
listen to now 15-20 years later.

"Has the music you've listened to throughout your life
changed your attitude towards things? "

Yes, but most wounderful and strongest influence was when I
did not understand the lyrics. The things I have created in
my head back than would make any band from 90's look like a
pure joke.

plato was wrong.
music itself doesn't do shit but move a few air molecules
around. it's what your perception makes of it.
