there ARE programs you can use to imitate traditional
instruments like trumpets or saxophones, right?
like, you are able to program the tones the instrument plays
etc.
where are those programs? fir a mac, please.

You might be best using samples, or something.

Single note, multisampled things like soundfonts/NN-xx
refills aren't too bad. So traditional instruments are
easier to synthesise than others, but people who can play
that particular instrument can almost always spot when it's
synthetic.

I've seen some neat physical modeling ensembles built for
Reaktor that do strings and wind instruments - it ships with
one called Steam Pipe - but it's not cheap and it eats a lot
of cpu. For "realistic" real-world instrument sounds I like
the sounds built into my Roland RS-5 keyboard.

There are some good VSTi around but they use a lot of CPU!!!

Try http://www.kvr-vst.com - probably the definitive VSTi site.
