GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!
I saw it for the second time this easter (first time at a film-festival here in bergen last year), and it's still fucking great!
Rhythmic samurai movie!
I love it!

I found the fake, CGI blood pretty crappy looking and while i like my over-the-top samurai action (Baby Cart, Sword of Doom, All of Kurasawas), I thought Zatoichi was piss-poor compared to the rest.
wait till u see "Twilight Samurai"..... makes Zatoichi (who's a yakuza, not a samurai at all) look like "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"). I believe its out on general release at end of April - it got nominated for best foreign film at the oscars this year and it is truly sublime - best/morst realistic samurai fight scenes in a long long long time and full of pathos.
I enjoyed Last Samurai for battles/costume/setting but thought it way too "bushido" heavy.

the bad blood-effects and stuff in zatoichi were brilliant! intentional or not, it added to the comedic effect of the film!

i suppose it was an all-singing all-dancing pantominme type deal.... which is pretty comic alright. More like a Bollywood film than Samurai action - but thats ok...
it is good but i just saw Twlight Samurai the same day before it so i was utterly underwhelmed when i saw Zatoichi. its a relative thing.....

I may have to check it out, but it seems like a different type of movie, though. I love OLD, OLD kung-fu movies, and Zatoichi was sort of a modern take on them.. it worked (as opposed to those "put a samurai in the modern world and shoot at him, but he survives" plots)

Takeshi Kitano is THE KING! Great in Battle Royale, "the postman" (don't know what they may have translated this to in other countries...), brother, and all those other films I've seen him in, but can't remember or spell the name of.
