played a game of dungeons and dragons 3rd ediotn on easter, and quite enjoyed it,.. does this make me a super geek????
basically,.. you have a DM "dungeon master" who writes up an interesting quest, and basically decideds what's going to happen,.. he is god for all intesive purposes, and you go around doing whatever the hell you want, only abiding by the general rules of combat, and how sensible the DM wants the game to be, he does stuff such as draws maps,.. makes dungeons,.. and writes whatever is needed for dramatic value,... and he has be a good storyteller to really set the scene, the rules are there to keep things realistic,
but ummm yeah,.. I had great fun....

I'm always the DM too. It does suck most of the time, but I've always wanted to be an escapist author, so for me it's kind of like an interactive-story-writing process. I'm not too keen on the rules though, especially for 3rd Edition. I just kind of rely on the players to keep me in line. I'm really into the role playing aspect of it; big up for escapism!!! I wish I could play as a character more often, especially in the Planescape Setting.

yeah, i used to do paper and pen rpgs in elementary and high school (not trying to insult you at all, that's just when i last did it) the only limit to these games is your own imagination (and the DM's imagination), which is their big advantage and draw.

the early years of M:TG were the best. It is such a great game, and the trading business was a game in it's own right. I remember it caused a ruckus when it made it's first appearance on some games-convention back in '94? I thought to myself what are they on about? Some time later when the revised edition just got out I got addicted to it like a harddrug skipping school for it and beating myself in the face for not taking the chance to obtain very cheaply all those alpha edition cards with the black lotus and moxes etc back then at the games-convention.
It ate my money up like nothing else as I found myself buying complete retailboxes and ripping open the boosterpacks of expansion sets in a frenzied state of mind.
I loved the strategic possibilities of the game, almost like elaborate chess.
But because they kept adding new sets (my money couldn't keep up) and adding new rules/changing rules I left it behind. I still have appr. 5000+ cards in a closet somewhere collecting dust.
Damn I wanna play it again.

yes, they rendered all the old powerful cards useless as there were mere commons that suddenly were more powerful than extremely rare and expensive out of prints. By doing so, "they threw in their own windows" as we say it where I live, because the popularity declined after that. And also, later on there were too many different sets of rules for tournaments, I used to know the rules like the back of my hand, I could've easily refereed matches but later they banned so many cards it kinda killed the spontaneity and became more of a whinefest over the rules instead of lovely debates over them.
Before all that I was holding the last pages of Inquest magazine like I was checking stocks, in fact the whole trading/selling business felt a bit like wallstreet where we gathered. It was a total craze, we played in a comicbookshop and the owner had to build an extra room just to maintain the crowds there.

oh god yes i remember! i've seen some of the new expansions, some of the new rules are okay (cycling allows you to return a card to your hand at any time for an additional casting cost) but some are dumb (like threshold which i don't remember but its stupid.) they're aren't as many great cards today - but richard garfield, the guy who made magic, he has a master's degree in game logic. he actually PATENTED the concept of the "collectible card game" so every one that has come out since earns him money. That bastard must be SO rich.
I used to play with a Black deck, it was all about the demons and death spells Instant cards for me.

Yeah, some of the funniest discutions I've ever had, is about the characteristics values. It comes to a point that we resolve to give 81 points to distribute on them. It will give three 18 and three 9. In cases of Warriors' Strenght 18 you still have to play the 2D10 of course...

remember the Chaos Orb? There's an old urban legend about it that most Magic players know...
At one of the first big Magic tournaments, a guy was in a heated match, and all he had was a Chaos Orb - what Chaos Orb does it that you raise it up and drop it - whatever it lands on is destroyed and cannot be brought back into the game. What the guy does is something desperate - he TEARS UP his Chaos Orb (a HIGHLY expensive, rare card) and drops the confetti remaining - it lands on almost ALL his opponent's things, and then a bit lands on HIS library (his deck) so he ends up losing the match regardless.
Goddamn! Magic was a great game!

Man, I used to, plus some reprints from the series. Most of the better Legends were in gold though - I used to also play with a Gold deck, but it's really hard to do because everything has high casting cost requiring multiple types of mana - you HAVE to rush your opponent as soon as you can.
My friend had a Glacial Chasm - as long as it stays tapped, everything that is tapped remains tapped in play. You can't imagine how much that card would piss me off.

hah i remember the blacker lotus ( from that stupid edition )
techically to use this *common* card, you have to tear it up to pieces for it to go into play, well there was this kid who when using the blacker lotus, would bring the card out of its sleeve just a little bit, and then scratch the top of the card untill some flakes came off.
geez... some nerds..

I think I bought a couple 'o decks of overpower, it was nice, not a M:TG beater by any means but nobody played it so it died an early death here :\
My fave deck must've been the bigass 3 colors deck Black/Blue/White. Boy that one was mean, slow starter but once I got my shit into play it was nearly impossible to defeat. I had such a great time devicing new combo's. I even made one that produced unlimited lives! It was a black/green/white deck if I remember correctly and it required a very elaborate setup but I managed to set it up once i an actual game, that surely was a highlight of magic for me. I remember the people who were watching it trying to find a flaw in my design but failing to find it and congratulating me afterwards.

One of the biggest tricks for my black deck was my Ebon Praetor (from Fallen Empires) and Breeding Pit (Legend or Dark i think). Sacrifice a black creature to Ebon Praetor to give it +2/+1 till end of turn. Breeding Pit made a 1/1 black token creature every turn (or was it for 1 black mana?) God, i would DESTROY people with that combo.

ah yes! good times! Every deck seemed to have something it was good at, which was cool, because you could basically pick a deck for whatever strategy you needed.
Black - death spells, weakening enchantments, undead creatures
Red - damage spells, fire magic, very offensive-oriented Blue - healing magic, lots of interesting enchantments, very oriented towards clever spells (remember Doppleganger?)
Green - lots of mana-producing things, woodland creatures many with trample, also good enchantments
White - healing magic, protective magic, quick creatures many with banding

You bet it! Remember that combo that provides infinity mana? It's a Green/blue one, but I can't remember the cards,
Well, that druid that untaps lands, that green enchantment that provides an extra green mana for the land enchanted, that Homeland card that untap a target creature, and the owner of the untaped card can pay 3 manas to untap another creature wherever this hability is used. Get the idea? tree green enchantments in an island, a druid and that spell. Endless green mana! hahaha
