Can you actually build muscle with these contraptions? I've been seeing more and more adds with ridiculously buff people saying things like, "It's like I'm doing 1000 situps while I'm doing my other work!".
knowledge?

my girlfriends got one, they do work, but its not as beneficial or as fun as going to the gym. they are also very very very painful.
i wouldn't bother-you could spend your money on better things...like horse hair truffles or blind dallabeller

I don't think they are very healthy. Those things can train your muscles for movements that are not natural or movements that you will never make in normal body motion. But me is no expert, just my opinion.

Off topic sorry: would be kewl to use those things the other way around. Make music with you muscle output. It is already done by STELARC. Check him at http://www.stelarc.va.com.au/
Very kewl. He and Richard should hook up, could be interesting. :)
