and then making tunes out of the good bits contained
within.

I've been thinking and the least crap things which I have
produced thus far have been using this method.

Do you do this?

ill generally make music out of a combination of jam samples
and freshly constructed elements

me and my mate did some live jamming on my two pawn-shop
quality keyboards a while back and recorded it. while the
outcome was not fantastic, it certainly was not a loss. i
personally like live jamming, and would like to do it more
in my material. live jamming pops up a LOT in my cowboy
sugarcakes stuff, though. It's about %40 of most Sugarcakes
melodies. :)

a general rule is to start recording before you play
the music

I suppose up until this point (I have a bit if theory and
that) I kind of treated melody as something that can be
mathematically contrived (I'm a big fan of Bach's well
tempered clavier and Steve Reich's phasing stuff and
whatnot)... sort of left-brained I guess...

Tonight, I have had a mini-epiphany I guess... in time to
saskrotch having a crap, no less.

yeah, melody really has to come from the heart. even when
its from a machine, if that makes sense.
