Fretless Bass Goodness

Let's talk about how much we love good basswork;
specifically, mr. jenkinson's finest hours:

For me, Tetra-Sync (off Ultravisitor) and Smedley's Medley
(Feed Me Weird Things) really do it for me. Any other good
ones?

By Smedley there, I mean The Swifty. Ehem.

anything by Jaco Pastorius. ;)

oh, and btw: that Tom's bass solo in The Swifty sounds VERY
much like Jaco's one in Havona (off Weather Report's 'Heavy
Weather')

i read somewhere that jaco pastorius "de-fretted" his bass
with some pliers.

actually, that is true.

I did the same on my Fender-copy.

I have a de-fretted 4-string Fender-copy (a Vester).
And then I have a black, 4-string, '84 Aria Pro II Heritage
Laser Electric.
And last but not least, my newly bought mahogany-brown Cort
5-string Action-bass (which is a fucking good bass for the
price btw).

i did fuck it up...besides removing the frets, I also
painted it, so it sounds terrible. On top of that I had to
reconnect the electronics...sigh

but It was a blast anyway :)

start, Junktion?

It's the Rainbow Bass - constructed by Carl Thompson
for Les Claypool. It doesn't get much better than that... 6
string fretless...

I don't really care who it's made for and who by.

I think it looks horrible!

I can't say i like the stripes, but damn that is fine

I've been thinking about getting a 6 string. No time soon,
as I need some more gear first... but Id like to get a 6
string, and not have a low b. Id want to have a high C, and
F. That would be sweet. Do chords, and more melodic stuff.

I get bored playing a bass like a bass. Just basslines
etc... I like to use it more like a solo instrument, or do
chords and/or melodies.

But yeah. Bass = Good.

painting it can actually fuck up how it sounds? does it
change how the wood resonates or something?

I've always wanted to get a bass, especially since I've
played guitar for 5 years, bass comes very easy for me. I
jam on my friend's very nice Fender Jazz Bass (the real,
American made kind that costs $800+ and actually sounds good
enough to carry the fender name, unlike the crappy korean
ones) a lot, tearin up bass solos just comes easy for me, as
it should for anyone who is used to playing on tiny strings
(aka guitar). Bass is easier than guitar for me because the
strings are farther apart and the frets are wider... not to
say that I'm BETTER on bass than on guitar, but I fuck up
less on bass...

Mick Karn (previously of Japan) is another good fretless
bassist. But that solo on Tetra-sync pwns all.

activebass.com is a good place to start. Try out a bass
somewhere, and borrow some books and movies at the library
on the subject

Q4Z2X, you're insane.

Is it said "Jayko" or "Jocko". I always say the first one.
