SP 808 bargain!

Shit man

I've been thinking of buying an SP808 for ages, and finally
one comes up on eBay at a time when I can't afford it! And
it's in my town!

Check this out, it seems like a real bargain at that price!
It's a fully upgraded EX, but with the old black case -
looks much cooler!

SP808EX

what all can you do with an 808ex? versus the original 808?

why not just save up all of your money & get an Akai
MPC2000XL or 4000? I don't know... just something about the
808 limited with inputs/outputs & it just doesn't seem
expandable/upgradeable...

i do however, enjoy that picture of the system 100 is it, in
your avatar?

My avatar's a Korg MS20.

This particular 808 has the expansion board though with the
extra outputs.

I WANT IT! My friend has one, and they're bloody excellent
for live stuff, and really useful in the studio too.

do you know what I want?.... hehe...

the Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 & a nice fucking sound system
to pump the beats out of that shit!!!!

Yeah man, the Elektron Machinedrum looks fucking brilliant.
As does the SidStation - they had a CD on Future Music a few
years back with samples on, and it sounded absolutely
delicious and unlike anything else I've ever heard before.

What gear do other people desperately want to buy?

i've got the monomachine by elektron and it's pretty
"dope." the sequencer isn't as versitle asLSDj's
but it's synthesis more than makes up for it.

i like the monomachine better than the machinedrum because
it can do pitched stuff so well, it is the best bassline
synthesizer i've ever played with ... you can really make
the most of elektron's paradigm with it ... a true
electronic music workstation ... for just drums though,
there are arguabley better drum machines than the sps-1

just because i can't quit pasting the url, here's a
link to my 20 min ep done mainly with monomachine (some gb +
psr510 in there too).

the sidstation seems like a big ripoff to me, why bottle a
synth chip up .. that you could use to compose whole tunes
... in a single midi module? sad!

"What gear do other people desperately want to buy?"

My list, for things to save up for, for the next year/year
and a half, is:

1. Yamaha Motif Rack. (I'm going to be trying to get a job
with some commercial music firm, making music for
commercials/radio etc, so I need something that has some
slick sounds, that I can access easy. When you work at
places like that, you can get calls asking for a certain
type of track, in 3 hours... so you need something that you
dont have to fuss with.

2. An external reverb. Again, the hardware just has
something about it, that softreverbs seem to lack.

3. An analogue compressor. They really just sound so much
better then digital ones.

in that order.

I'd love to get a Juno again. I used to have a Juno 60, it
was bloody fantastic.

So what analogue gear do people in here own? Does anyone
have a Korg MS20? Or one of the huge Roland modular systems?

manicminer - NO, don't do it, get the mpc1000. it is 10
times better. You will seriously grow out of the 808, the
mpc has the breeding to be a great investment.

Zeus - I hear the Motif Rack has problems which the keyboard
version doesn't have. Bad latency problems, if I recall. I
think Yamaha are aware but aren't planning a fix.

I have an Sp 808ex and an MPC2000xl+
if you want to make your own music
get the MPC the sp808 is cool for like
live us to remix your material or just to mess around
but like dave_g said youll grow out of it i rarely use mine
maybe for like some fx and stuff and quick sampling but its
really not all that the MPC is alot more open ended the
sound quality is wayyy better and its just a bad ass machine
all together so if your gunna spend the money at least get
the MPC1000 youll be happier im thinking GOOD LUCKKKKKK!!!!!

I had an MS20 in my apartment for a while, I wasn't to
impressed. I was however very impressed that the guy who
bought it found it for ...

I hope your sitting down ...

TWENTY DOLLARS CANADIAN.

"I will do you for free" has the MS20 all over it.

offline manicminer from Paris (France) on 2004-04-10 10:46 [#01137695]

Shit. 20 dollars for an MS20? I hate hearing those stories
about people finding old synths cheap. It just makes me
jealous.

I don't want the sp808 for writing music, I want to use it
as a live tool, which I think it is better for as an "all in
one" solution than the MPC. Maybe I'm wrong?

what other gear I wouldn't mind owning & using...

what is it... the Akai Z8 rack sampler... :)

I'd like to get a Roland SH-101 just to fuck around on & use
for some nice/cheesy melody lines.

Has anyone ever used Emagic Logic Audio... I don't know the
correct title of the program, but I'd like to use that stuff
with my MOTU 828... anyone used logic w/the motu?

hmm... The Akai MPC 1000 seems fucking cool... glad to see
that sort of technology in a smaller design & not as fucking
clumbsy as the 3000 or 4000. But does it do as much?
expandability & sound processing & shit? I want to do all of
my sequencing of drum patterns from one single machine...
then run the outboard sounds/midi out to my individual drum
machnies... what machine could i even think about purchasing
to accomplish this?

all of that would be intertwined with the Z8 popping up
samples & feeding from my laptop & shit... good stuff you
know?

i got an MS-20 + sq-10 for +/- 400 euros, but it was before
the euro, cool deal, exellent synth :-D

one of my best friends has an sp-808, a good deal too, an
"used" one, nevern used but exposed so he got it cheap,
without the expansion board...
and yes i think it's kind of limited, maybe i need to use it
with the board but i think if you have the cash you better
buy separate things

it was fantastic. But I sold it, which I now regret.
