I remember reading about slate coned speakers. They worked the same way as those flat "picture" speakers (not actually cones- more flat surfaces that moved like cones). Meant to be really good, they were v. expensive though. I imagine they'd be very fragile though, slate has a tendency to crack if any sudden force is applied to it.
