Social Music Experiment

I've been brewing an idea (literally, ie. mixing and
boiling ingredients in my skull) of...

dun da da DUUUUUUN!.....

A social music experiment!

This idea is about an "experiment" that is "social" in
nature and about "music", hence "social music experiment".

or something...

This is just an idea, nothing started or concrete.
There needs to be organization. Our collective goal should
be a "super" audio composition, superior (at least in man
hours spent on it) to anything an individual could
realistically accomplish by themself (maybe not if an
individual like aphex works with unique software in a unique
way). If 50 people participate for example, and each
contributed the time usually spent on an entire track to
their assigned 1 part out of 50, the result could be great.
Participants need to know what and how to contribute. All
the contributions would need to fit together as a whole at
the end too, which means the parts need to be assigned in a
digital way then combined later. Most likely, people would
have different opinions of how to organize who does what and
how, and there will be miscommunication and people who don't
follow the rules well (like qrter). But I suppose glaring
flaws like qrter's contributed part would give it character
at least.

One obvious way to set it up would be to assign each
participant one "measure" of the track. So, the entire track
would in effect be diced up like a pack of life savers, each
person working and polishing one life saver. Since dicing it
up seems the most natural way to assign parts, our
composition goal should perhaps be quite digital (something
like richard devine's lipswitch, so the parts will naturally
fit together sequentially) It seems the most natural thing
to create with so many people contributing would be
something complex... simply because it's hard for an
individual to create tedious stuff, but probably easier if
each participant works tediously on one part. An ambient
track tends to have a limited number of parts and is too an

and is too analogue to dice.

that's an interesting concept. it would require someone
with exceptional organizational skills to put something like
that together. one problem that could arise is that "too
many chefs spoil the broth" - a lot of people means a lot of
different tastes and opinions on what sounds good and how it
should go together, etc. not a bad idea at all, though.

Maybe:) I don't know the human being behind that "qrter".
And am not for a long time here to say for sure.

Give it a go. I like sprawling, bloated epics. One thinks of
Sandinista by The Clash, Apocalypse Now (Redux) or some
other big things. Ambition, lofty aims, impossible dreams,
madness... i want in.

This process would work well on, say, squarepusherish beats
because they're so digital, and each measure tends to sound
better when unique. But I have little idea of how anything
like melody or background ambience could fit in to this
process. Maybe there just shouldn't be any.

I don't have a computer, too. Shouldn't we start a new
thread about qrter?//// No, it's out of rules to discuss
people....:)
We are definitely talking offtopic, sorry, w M w.

I try to insult qrter in random ways at least once a week.
This is actually theraputic for him.
