I need free software that will take a wav (or an mp3) and simply make it louder without making it all crunchy because of over amplification. Modplug tracker's main problem is not allowing freedom of making samples louder (there's a limit, if the little picture of the sound wav goes outside the box, then it gets cut off and distorted). I already asked this and someone answeed but the topic must've gotten deleted or something because I can't find it. Will cool edit do this, (if cool edit is even a program)?

found it:
f.l.e.a from doghole on 21:25 11/21/2001 to mW..hmm I hear yer hardware woes..me I am running out of harddisk space and having to save all my stuff directly in mp3 format :(..but in the interim..you could try downloading a share/freeware wav editing suit like cooledit from www.downloads.com or some such ..they are usually quite slim and don't tax yer system much..save yer creation as a wav and then take it into the suite and there you can put on a ton of effects on it..fade in and out..even increasing the levels and volumes etc...the amps and boosts are usually pretty clean..I don't know its worth a shot if having low recording volumes is a major concern...

hey m - don't know how much ram you got, and if cool edit is working then you may as well flag reading the rest BUT:
I find Protools free quite awesome in that respect. [www.digidesign.com] (munches away at ram - and i think requires win98 ??) - but if you can run it - i very much recommend it.
You can "gain" yer tracks and find the highest peak - so that it doesn't cut of the wav you speak of. For some reason I manage to get it much louder than Cubase (which for some reason I can't get that loud without maxing out and causing some disturbing resonance on speakers). ? Hope this helps

GoldWave Digital Audio Editor which is shareware has an option to increase the sample rate and other cool tweaks.

btw, althought GoldWave is shareware, its fully functional except after about 10 mins or so it'll stop working. just close it and reopen it... or find a crack. :)

thanks for these suggestions, I'll have to check them out because cool wav's amplifier does exactly what modpllug's amplifier does; it only amplifies the wav within the visual constraints of a box the wav is in. If it goes outside the box the wav gets cut off! I don't get it, I know it's possible to amplify volume without distortion... just like you can turn up the volume control on your stereo and it simply gets louder, it doesn't cut off the sound or make it crunchy sounding. I just want it so that the volume will be loud sounding on headphones, with say the volume turned up to "6" instead of up to "10".

I'm sorry, I completely solved my problem. I was just too retarded to fully check out the options in this software I use, there was an option that wasn't in plain view but it's a seperate volume control. So now I can make super loud songs easily without having to "double up" the data in the pattern. eeexelent....
