I think your melodies are great, I think your beats are a
little generic. All these songs had great potential for me
until the beats kicked in, I think you need to use some more
interesting sounds rythm wise. What synth are you using on
the first song during the intro?

wayout from a plastic bubble on 2001-12-22 05:34 [#00063454]

yeah, on most of those songs i was going for a more
straightforward drum n bass sound beatwise...so i was using
mostly standard dnb sounds/rhythms..
i think i got that out of my system though...(they were
starting to sound a bit bland to me also..i've been working
on those songs for a while now..and figured i'd finish em up
and move on..)

the synth i used for the melodies on all the new tracks is
called sawcutter..
its a free tracker program (i'd tell you where to find it
but i forget..)

fantastic stuff, nice song names and a nice pointless image
of goldfish crackers:). 53 more things to do in 0 gravity:
It's just the right complexity to be an apealing song. At
about 2:00, it mutates somehow away from a nice beat into a
weird clumsy beat which was cool. What do you use, sorry if
you told me b4 already. Whatever it is, you easily (or maybe
tediously) manage to use volume well, like some drum hits
are louder than others. The melody is really unusual for
some reason, it sounds like it was made seperately without
thinking about how it would sound with the percussiony
stuff, but it works great a melow background element.

m on 2001-12-23 00:23 [#00063631]

god damn! cloudburst demonstrates use of volume even better
(volume is just a difficult thing to use in modplug tracker
which is what I use). It has another ambientish background
melody like the previous song, not really ambient, just
mellow... I especially love in multiple songs I've heard how
the percussion etc just kicks into extremely aggressive
agitated moments practically without warning (also like "let
the base kick", I think from squarepusher?)

m on 2001-12-23 00:32 [#00063633]

trillian, electric sulking machine, ball point life forms
equally amazing. More mellow melodies with interesting
percussion stuff. I think you have the concept that stuff is
relative in music. For example you can have an entire song
of very complex drums, but it has nothing simple to stand
out from in order to be complex. But if you put complexity
next to something that is more simple than it, the effect is
far more interesting. An example is about 2:30 on ball point
life forms (and many other examples). I hope you're still
planning to send a cd to me sometime in the future and I'll
send mine to you whenever I get around to making it if you
want.

wayout from a plastic bubble on 2001-12-23 02:44 [#00063646]

wow, thanks m..
i use tuareg (beats+sequencing) and sawcutter(melodies).

and yeah, i was thinking about putting together a cd
soon...we can trade :)
and ill have to go check out what you've been doing, havent
been to your site in a while..

wayout from a plastic bubble on 2001-12-24 00:32 [#00063816]

your stuff is so complex, m..its really quite amazing...how
long does it usually take you to do a song?
do you create all the sounds yourself, or do use some
samples?
i mean like the liquidy-bubbly sound on 'a fractal brewing
of fraggles' ...

great titles and descriptions too...
"This song becomes more and more writhing with muppety
creatures that just beg to be squished. The mic is tested by
one of them before unleashing sound that can shrink a
muppet's left brain hemisphere." :)

..you could probably make a lot of money writing fucked up
childrens' stories..you could start releasing albums in
little chunky-page storybooks like radiohead did with kid a

have you heard of blectum from blechdom? their music is a
bit like your own..plus they have this whole complicated
mythology involving all these bizarre characters..you should
check them out, if you havent already, that is..

anyhoo...keep it up..and you should definatly think of
putting a cd together..i would surely buy it..

The time it takes varies from song to song... I often work
on multiple ones at the same time, Plus a lot of time is
spent just listening to it, not altering data, or trying
various directions to take it and deleting failed ideas. I
don't create any of the "1st generation" samples (because I
don't have a microphone and can't) These are just simple
sounds downloaded from the internet or found in my computers
innards by searching for wav in the "find files or folders".
I enter data in a way so that I create sounds pretty much
absolutely unrelated to the samples I use, it's sort of like
how complex language can be constructed from some handful of
letters and sounds (I only use a handful of samples, because
I never downloaded any more- it's probably about time to
though as that voice sound I use in so many songs). I like
finding techniques. Thanks a lot for your interesting kind
comments, I'll check out that group you suggested.

wayout from a plastic bubble on 2001-12-24 05:30 [#00063847]

yeah, a lot of the sounds i use are from the game rogue
spear...theres a folder of tons of sounds, some of which you
dont even really notice in the game..like the sound of trees
creaking, etc..that and a few obscene vocal samples from the
internet :)
...though i did recently figure out how to make weird
bubbly-gurgly popping noises with my program's standard
percussion sounds

I want to eventually take the fears that have been embedded
naturally by evolution into the minds of people during their
long time spent as hunter/gatherers and primates. Sounds
like growling bears, or any other dangerous animals,
crunching leaves like something stalking you, and use a
bunch of samples like that, crickets, things that we have a
deep subconscious feel for, like a fear of spiders, (but
they don't make much sound). Get out of the artificial
safety of modern life. I also think that our minds
construction in a way as to understand and enjoy music has a
lot to do with our use of language. I've found that human
voice is the most interesting thing to use as a sample in
sound(to me) perhaps because of subconscious interest in
syllables due to the meaning we give them when we talk. Even
when someone else uses it, like autechre did a lot on tri
repatae, nothing decipheable or meaningful, just as an
interesting sound. I've noticed cats generally find music
unpleasant, and if we sent a record to an alien
civilization, maybe their minds havn't evolved in a way to
care at all about "music". Maybe they could simply look at
the grooves in the record and find it's information more
interesting.

Maybe your stuff sounds more original than most peoples
because you use equipment that few people use. Where'd you
even hear of tuareg or sawcutter? (I use modplug tracker,
and I recently found a switch to amplify the volume so it
isn't always so quiet which is good) Did you delete your
"wayout" alias on ampcast?

I really recommend Crunch's "1" if you havn't gotten it.
It's available at www.forcedexposure.com. If you liked "a
fractal brewing of fraggles" even a little you'd definately
like that. It's probably my favorite or a close tie with
autechre of all albums I've heard.

My email is iannoll@hotmail.com, can I have yours just so I
don't lose contact with you in case we decide to trade
albums sometime?

wayout from a plastic bubble on 2001-12-24 21:32 [#00063959]

yeah, ive used a lot of bug sounds from rogue spear in
songs..voice samples too..both i think can give electronic
music a more organic feel..kinda like later ae...a lot of
the sounds they use remind me of bugs
what you were saying about vocals is interesting..maybe
thats why most people tend to shy away from instrumental
music..the response i usually get when i try to introduce
people to the music i like is "isnt there any singing?" its
like people feel more comfortable hearing someones
voice...even if their not listening to/understanding what
their saying..kind like sigur ros' music...they make really
destinctly emotional music..but most of their lyrics are
mostly in an imaginary language (some are in icelandic..)

as for my software...i found it all just by searching for
free music software at downloads.com
i dont think its really that different from what others
use...maybe like fruityloops with less features? i havent
really tried much other software..so i dont really know..

i'll have to check out crunch..i've been meaning to for a
while now...i'll have money after christmas..and i was
planning on heading over to forcedexposure anyways..they
seem pretty cool, i have an order in the mail from them at
the moment..

oh, and i didnt delete the wayout alias..i just changed it
to ford prefect...though i think im going to change it
again...heheh

my email is: rhogan@fc.meca.edu

I havn't tried anything else besides modplug tracker either,
but reaktor and reason I hear are some of the better ones.

spanking new tracks to my site (since i started this thread,
