Short Jazz track I've just finished (less of it is sample based than you'd think!) . Comments welcome. The Jazz, Man. Comments Welcome. Cheers.

really digging the vibraphone, or rhodes, some of these wicked sax bits are awesome, but i think they might sound a bit better with some vibrato on them. the drum line is great, very nice sound to it, like real brushes.
sounds a bit dry overall, maybe some reverb over the whole thing would straighten it out.
altogether very interesting and original, great job.

Thanks, I'm really happy with the drums, all drum machined, just with some careful programming :)
Re: Reverb, thanks I'll bear that in mind, I did play around at the mastering stage with a bit of stage style reverb and record crackle (to make it sound like it's an old recording from a club) but it sounded a bit gimmicky. If I revise it, I'll probably put some subtle reverb on the master channel.
Ta for the comments :)

hmmm you could do sick things with that idea. :D

Gwely: Cheers, I'll probably be re-working this into a longer piece and I'll take that on board.
x-tomatic: Thanks mate, yep I was aiming for a "real" jazz band feel, it would actually be possible to play it just with 4 guys.
Aminal: The brass is a saxophone, the "trilling" bits (like the one that repeats 3 times .29-.36) are sample, but the rest is done from single note samples. The player is a guy called Patrick Cress. I got the samples off a CD that came with a Reason book I got.

wow you're a moderator...this track is absolutely brilliant. reminds me of the work of nash bridges and jessica tandy. The mathmatical constructs of the musical elements are not only scientifically perfect but even show a grasp of metaphysics. Truely amazing. 14/10

actually it was really enjoyable. I think the drums sound a little rigid though...they let the track down.

great! were I would like it a bit longer, though. just some crazy improvisation which builds and builds until the track suddenly drops to a smooth chill-ish thing to finish it off...

I like the lack of reverb... makes it sound more like an old jazz recording... in fact, I'd say make the rhodes sound drier even, it sounds a bit out of place. Actually the drums too... the sax is dry, the rest is about the same... weeee... good stuff, fun. Definitly got the old recording feel on the sax, sounds like he's playing in the 1940s while the rhodes and drums decided to wait 60 years before coming in
So short... cool ideas, love the rhodes/sax lines together... you going to elaborate on this or happy as a little idea? Would be cool as an interlude type deal.

to me the drums sound very programmed, they should be loosened up.
i very much like the rhodes, less crazy about the sax.
i'd like to hear where this leads...

The cymbals sound really clumsy and intrusive. Very un-jazzy, to be honest. Drums kind of sound that way, too. Clean samples, though.
The rhodes was nice.

The drums do sound a little "loopy" and non-jazz, plus the 0.29 to 0.36 bit needs revising... it could do with a little loosening, but altogether pretty cool. I like the sax parts and the smooth rhodes chords. Nice atmosphere too, sounds kinda dry and dusty. Have you heard clifford gilberto on ninja tune? Also, on a tenuously-related tangent, check out the world saxophone quartet (did the sax on bjork's "the anchor song").

I do have new purple pants. This time, they have taken on the form of music rather than clothing and they were commisioned by Mr. Thaddius Smoyer. To DL find it on the same site. If you've not heard anything since Silo, you've got some catching up to do boy. "Solitaire" and "ppl pants" can be found using the link to the jazz track.
Other tracks such as "Siberia (Altai Mix)" (My best since Silo IMO), "Cave Rave" and my remix of Marlowe's track, "antartica" can all be found here.
