Subject: Registry Error: Can't Startup At All
OS: WinME
CPU/Ram: 1.4 GHz, 224 RAM, Athlon Duron+, 40 GB

Comment:
Okay, I recently uninstalled LimeWire, which comes equipped
with the ever-annoying adware LimeShop... so, after
uninstlling Limewire, I notice LimeShop is still in the list
of Programs to ADD/REMOVE...
so i try to uninstall it and get an error repeatedly. So i
go to "Search" and look for any files with 'Limeshop' in
them. There are several, and i delete them all. i remember
they all had 'limeshop' directly in the name, except for
two, which i recall as "setup.cgh", and someother one.,,.
So, when i shutdown, and restart the next day,...the
computer comes up with the Windows Millenium Edition Startup
Screen.... and says something to the effect of:

1. Normal
2. Logged (BOOTLOG.TXT)
3. Safe mode
4. Step-by step confirmation

CAUTION: Windows detects a registry/configuration error.
Run SCANREG to correct this error.

....

so I try to run Safe Mode,....and it just hangs there in a
gray screen with "Safe Mode" at all corners. I run in
Normal, and it runs ScanDisk, which does nothing, and then
tries to detect PlugnPlay. So i choose automatically detect,
and it freexes while only reading the A: drive. I try to
browse for my C: drive or any others, but to no avail. So I
run in step-by-step several times, and still nothing. It
seems I can't run SCANREG, can't get to the DOS prompt. How
can I get my Windows back??? Please, without formatting, I
hAve so much stuff on here.....

Please help me. I've also tried WinME boot-disk from
Internet (don't have mine), and it didn't work.

obviously, I am on someone else's computer right now.
If any of you geniuses out there can help me, by all means,
I will send donations....

PLEASE.....!

I have over 500 minutes of song material and others that I
have composed on this HD. If I have to format I will shoot
myself.

weird behaviour :(

getting rid of LimeShop shouldn't have done all this to your
system, it sounds like something else did this

maybe you got virused?

you dont have to reformat to back up your drive contents,
just disconnect the drive from your computer, and plug it
into your friends as a slave

then you can access it and copy all the stuff you need

just in case you do actually have tp reformat

:)

if I can somehow get to the command prompt to run SCANREG
from A:/ or C:/ I might have a chance. But I don;t know how
to get there. Or how to get SCANREG on floppy if I cant
read from C:/ when I doget to the prompt.

ohwell,....I'm going to smoke and play some Chrono Cross to
settle my nerves. ANY help is appreciated and glorified.
THANKS IN ADVANCE, ALL!!!!

to be honest, i don't think scanreg can help at this point

you should be able to read your c: drive from a boot floppy

btw, looks like you're a bit too used to linux or UNIX coz
you've used a slash instead of backslash for your directory
designator

;)

I tend to agree with Balsalm. ME is a joke and a bad one at
that. Take your HD drive over to a mate's house, copy your
files to their machine, format your HD, put XP Pro or
Windows 2000 on your HD, then copy the files back. Even if
it's not the cause of the problem:
A) It will likely fix it.
B) You will have a far better, more stable OS.

yes, definately

Me is a joke, its basically a bug-downgrade to Windows 98 SE
with added bugness

use NT 4, 98 SE, 2k, or XP

don't go for XP Home though, that's a pile of shit too

to get what done?

to get a new version of windows?

legally could cost you anything up to £200

do it how most of the people who have a computer and it'll
cost you anywhere between Free and £40

;)

A pint to thank you mate for the use of their machine for
the afternoon and their copy of XP Pro = about £2.

you could probably get a good deal on eBay if you want

but like I said, if you go legal, you could end up spending
a horrendous amount of money on a legal copy of Microsoft
OS.

to be honest, with your spec machine you'd be better off
with Win98 SE

i'd go for win2000 instead. it's a preemptive multitasking
operating system like NT/winxp. much more stable.
