yr musical evolution after idm...

(i don't know why, the topics here are always "what brought
you to idm" but not what comes after... like idm was the
final stage...)

what are the musical genres you have discovered after
idm?

personally... when i think of it, i didn't know a lot of
things when i got into idm!! i got into rock since then, i
already had OK Computer by Radiohead in mp3 before but i
didn't listen to it, back in the day... then i got to like
the band more and more when i discovered Hail To The Thief,
now i really love Radiohead... - hmm, i discovered Sonic
Youth after idm too!! and Frank Zappa... and... etc. lots of
important things i missed.

i also discovered post-rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor &
co.), some metal (though except Opeth, i like it but haven't
got any cds yet - i'm not that *keen*, just one track from
time to time), and techno (even though i knew Fluke from a
long time - but that was just serendipitous)... now i can
say i listen a lot more to FSOL (well, ok, FSOL isn't really
techno!), Underworld, Fluke, Ken Ishii... than Autechre,
Aphex Twin, Plaid, Squarepusher... - i got into more
experimental stuff too but i'm into it since years now, with
Coil - i got into noise (Merzbow...),
noise/whatever/improvisation (Boredoms...) and "lowercase
music" (Bernhard Günter...) : )

the latest genre i discovered was trip-hop, it started with
Massive Attack which was a "revelation" to me... only
discovered it last summer! Portishead and Tricky too,
they're so well-known and i missed them all this time...
o_O

i think i might be getting into jazz also in the future; i
do not have a lot of jazz right now, well i have things by
John Zorn, Jan Garbarek i like a lot, and some electro/jazz
combinations... i have already borrowed some jazz records
from my father but they didn't catch my attention yet - too
tame... but i don't know why, i have the intuition that when
i will be an adult i could like jazz a lot...

hehe, It?s similar for me: Godspeed You! Black Emperor +
Merzbow + lowercase + Sonic Youth + Jazz...

evolution is neccesary, but very often today I?m quite bored
with everything I hear... Seems a long time I heard anything
fresh, interesting and individual... (i?m getting old and
whiny I suppose?)

I envy those who "discovered" afx last year or something!

btw

classical music is before and after every other style

I've always listened to quite an eclectic mix of styles. I
have never really been into a certain genre above all
others. The only reason I still come here is because I like
the people, not because I particularly love electronic music
above all else.

no - what we call "classical music" has just been around
since 1500 and after...

Folk music from all places around the world is before
everything!
(and I like african music mostly)

Don't love anyone. But I like them...and I suppose I like
you as well, even if you are a bit too nice all the time. I
would prefer it if you got pissed off and insulted people
once in a while.

since i started listening to idm... i've listened to a lot
of jazz... some world music (right now i'm really really
digging these Angola 70's compilations fuckin' wicked
shit)... really avant experimental electronic stuff (which
can under some definitions of idm be differentiated from
it)... avant classical... not so avant classical... more
rock... more hip hop... etc.

in that case... here where I live we have some traditionally
trained composers who now have discovered experimental
electronic music... says it all really, it?s not the people
in the schools who are creative for real - it?s the people
on the streets... (as always)

jazz.

i remember i decided to check out Jaco Pastorius stuff after
i heard about his influence on Squarepusher and heard his
name mentioned in a few Sq's interviews. then i got a lot of
Weather Report stuff. this is how it all began.

it turned out to be one of the biggest musical discoveries
in my life. one thing i really like about jazz is that it
can be really challenging... sometimes much more challenging
then the best idm acts.

endless amount of good jazz... keeps me occupied... i
haven't even really listened much to weather report yet...

Well, no i don't , but I do like Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis,
Disco Inferno, My Bloody Valentine and the Durrutti Column,
who i all think have had, in some way, an influence on this
ker-azy mixed up genre we grudgingly call IDM

I've gotten into Air recently... I don't really consider
them electronic music... their new album is nice and
relaxing!

each Weather Report album is so different, special and
diverse, especially the first five...
WR are totally awesome. i'd say it's really stuff for the
musically hungry :)
