I hear you, I had a job last summer where it was ''work'' in
name only. I HATE not having anything to do at work. I don't
mind doing stuff, it's the waiting and time sapping factor
that annoys me about the rat race. I want the day to go by
quickly. So I'm glad my job is nerve wracking and full of
nutcases.

My last job was a pleasent mix of that and interesting,
difficult stuff. Most of the time I could choose which to
do. Suited me down to the ground as if I was tired or
hungover, I could put headphones on, stock up on OJ and
mineral water and do the mindless work, safe in the
knowledge I would be unlikely to make mistakes and, if I
did, they would be largely without consequence. On the other
hand when I wanted to do something interesting/new to
quickly pass the time, there was plenty of that too.

How do you get such a wonderous mix I hear you cry?
Work at a company that either:
a) Has had a recent bout of heavy layoffs- the overwhelming
shortage of staff means:
i) A huge range of essential work is simply not being done-
all of this is exciting and new to you, not to mention the
posibility for CV boosting.
ii) No reasonable manager can rant at you, provided at least
some of your own work is done- no one is doing all their
work due to staff shortages. If they do complain, throw down
the old "Team work" card. This is a sort of taboo that
cannot be argued with. No manager in their right mind will
admit in some instances teamwork is a bad thing. Simply
explain most of your "essential work" for the day is done
and you noticed that department/person x needed a hand. Say
that it's in everyone's, the company especially, interests
that this work gets done whereas what you'd be doing
otherwise would ultimately be "busy work". Explain your
previous work in this area (fabricate past jobs, university
modules etc. to gain credibility) if they question your lack
of experience to perform this task.

b) Has people in other departments who are chronically
lazy/incompetent to do their jobs.

NB most companies have the latter situation, if not the
former ;)

Also, doing the work of other people (provided you make it
quite clear at the time that this is just because you can
afford the time and it's not going to be a regular thing)
endears you to other departments/people in the company.
Despite not being a socialite of work by any means (I seldom
went to work parties or company dances/balls) managed to
have the largest turn out of my leaving party of the past
fifteen years in the company (according to the old hands- it
was certainly the biggest send off I saw in my time there).
Looking around the table, I'd helped 90% of the people there
with some of "their" work. There's also the advantage of
being able to ask other people for references should you
annoy your line manager as well as the consideration that if
you help a wide range of people, at least one of them will
be in management in the near future. You can do some great
jobs this way. I've done manual labour with our caretaker,
made decisions on behalf of managers and negotiated with
clients (none of which were my job) all under my job (which
was largely being a DBA).
