both aleamapper and asect:dsect (which the dutch online
store where I ordered it spelled that as asext:dsect -
goodness!) are huge steps forward from lipswitch.

problem with lipswitch is that it seems all beats and a lot
of DSP fuckery, nothing much more.

although track 1 and track 5 (from the top of my head) are
quite excellent. yeh yeh yeh.

It's not bad, I guess. It gets a bit boring, though.

asect dsect is much better imo...lipswitch is nice too. but
asect dsect is probably one of best 5 albums released last
year. devine is surely one of best electronic musicians
around. and his live shows are something to really look
forward to...great guy

I saw him do a dj set, at the warp tour 2 summers ago, in
NYC.

It was very loud and fast and crazy

you say it so much better, Fabien.

your comments are like a summer's breeze, wafting over
xltronic, lying face down on some warm grass, pants down
with bare bottom.

richard devine is the business. hear his come to daddy
remix? fucking great song.

his tunes are like funked up static in a bouncey castle of
sugarcube DSP

call of duty" though

he say's he often uses upwards of 3000 sounds a song,
believe it or not you can f'n hear it. when listening to
asect:dsect on headphones in a pitch black room, i nearly
pass out from the awe-inspiring meticulousness of his
creations. dude states it takes him a week to get 30
seconds to a minutes worth of a track. highly recommended.

I really like the first track, patelle. And the track
towards the end that is quieter and more melodic - is that
the last track? Don't remember. The rest of the tracks, not
so much.

I've listened to aleamapper and asect:dsect and they
impressed me for the first few listens. Then I started to
wonder why he didn't just put some walnuts and ball-bearings
in a blender. I mean sure the sounds don't repeat, but are
they dissimilar enough to merit the kind of work herbwest is
describing?

offline herbwest from Seattle (United States) on 2004-03-04 15:36 [#01099172]
Points: 418 Status: Lurker

that's kinda what i was implying. on the surface the sounds
aren't radically different from one another. but on a dope
ass pair of headphones coupled with undivided attention, his
brilliance becomes evident. he himself describes what he
does as, "making alien environments." which is really how
is work should be viewed. anyone wanting or expecting
catchy or emotionally charged melodies are going to be
dissapointed. but if it's inventive sonic landscapes,
forward thinking aural textures combined bits of melody
poking through the surface then Devine is a dude you have to
check out. there is much more to what he does than pure DSP
wankery.

then...

Here's the problem - I often listen to new music on my
portable as I walk to work, and maybe I should reserve that
for more rockin tunes that go better with traffic noise.
It's frustrating, 'cause at that hour of the day I want to
listen to stuff like Tim Hecker and Fennesz, and it just
doesn't mix well with walking and traffic. I need a Cone of
Silence(TM) for my head.

But I complain too much - at least I don't car-pool and if
there's a radio on in the office, it's playing classical, so
I don't have to put up with contemporary adult alternative
or whatever they're calling bad music these days.

i like his work but he's one guy i can almost be sure of is
that he doesn't know exactly what he's doing when he writes
a song. like the way some things come out are by accident.

I love his explorations of timbre & sound spaces...

And the feeling of being able to zoom in on just the sounds,
or zoom out and feel the wholeness of their interactions &
rhythms...

Basic techno is the sound of people learning to count (up to
4), whereas RD is what techno would sound like if John Maeda
& Stephen Wolfram was stuck in Derrick May's infamous techno
elevator (alongwith Kraftwerk & G. Clinton)...

no way man. Its completely calculated.

out of all the IDM producers, Id say he is the best sound
designer/synthesist. He knows so much theory of synthesis
its not funny.

No, when he makes a sound, its intentional.

very meticulous.

his music does not sound random to me.

Those two are just great.

Richard is a nice guy.

speaking of alien sounds, anyone else feel like Asect:Dsect
has almost got samples from "Alien" and "Aliens" - the
screams of the xenomorphs, the spacecraft hull creaking, the
wind on the alien himeworld etc. check it out - i kid you
not.

Let Mendax kind of has that sci-fi feel to it. I love
it, though. Strange creature-like sounds moving from left to
right. Fun.

i love his music but my only problem is he uses a lot of
scrapey, high-pitched noises that grate on my ears after
awhile. everything is so full it's hard to sit down and
listen for long stretches. better to dance yo ass off!

to me is the opposite... his music just hypnotizes me... and
I can sleep to it, study with it, work ewith it or simply
listen to it... and dance to it... it enters my body with
every little sound and makes me a brain massage
