i graduated from the university of nottingham last year. got a 2:1 in a sociology/film dual discipline degree (before you get too excited it was an academic film course, not a practical one)..
ive been working for the family for about 6months now (dads a professional photographer).. this isnt what i want to be doing long term though.
and now that ive finished what ive been working on for the last couple of months, i thnk this is the right time to move on. i want to move away. start fresh. when my girlfriend's finished studying maybe she can come + live with me in our own place.
trouble is.. i dont know what i want to be doing as a job. all suggestions are welcome as i know that those of you who do work have a wide spectrum of careers/jobs. thanks for your help.. this is really getting me down at the moment.

i bet most of us don't know what we want to do. it's either you go for good money or something you love doing. ofcourse the perfect job would be getting paid well for doing work you like, but you must be extremly lucky to find a job like that. i think.
i wen't for a well paid job and that is also why im very unhappy. doing work i hate (boring office job), nothing creative...on top of it all it takes a lot of my time.
if i could pick again (im currently in a very shitty situation so i can't change anything at the moment), i would definitely go for something i enjoy doing...

Are you looking for a job in the media or what? You must have some sense of direction that you want to go in. If I were in your position and I had a bit of cash to spare I would travel around a bit to get ideas.

yeah.. no cash spare, unfortunately.. else id be somewhere else in the world right now.
i dont have a definite sense of direction really.. else i wouldnt have started this thread. i like the idea of being involved in working for a record label/music magazine - but im not interested in trying to break into the highly competitive world of large long established labels + mags. id want to be involved in something i was really passionate about.
i guess the priority right now is to go for something that will allow me to rent a flat of my own, pay the bills + not leave me too drained/depressed to go + spend time with my friends, listen to music, see my girlfriend + go to clubs/gigs.
a simple life really. a job i dont hate.. thats what im asking for suggestions for.. i think..

So you're no longer considered a student at your university? I think your best bet would be to speak with an advisor/counselor as these people can usually help you figure out what kind of career you'd enjoy the most.. It's possible that you never had any service like this wherever you went to school, but if you did have it and missed out, then that would kind of suck... Maybe you could still go back there and talk with one?

yeah - cheers. im actually still in touch with my head tutor from uni + he said he's happy to chat through this stuff with me. the uni has a careers (god, i hate that word) advisory service.. but its all about finding the right time to go, you know?

well if finding the right time is your only concern then you are doing good :) Just put down the crackpipe for a day and go have yourself a chat. I think the sooner you get this figured out (at least in terms of narrowing shit down a little), the happier you'll be. :]
(j/k about the crackrock)

nah, its true.. living in the grip of a serious crack problem isn't doing my job prospects any good.
youre right about the other stuff though. just hope my tutor can find the time to see me.
i appreciate all the ideas you guys have thrown at me. im giving up on this thread now. the answers to lifes problems will not be found here on xlt.
just nice to get a sounding board to make sure the trees im going to start barking up are the right ones.
thanks again. that is all.

im a teacher. Its great. Andy has been converted. He starts training in september. Even if you dont want to do it forever, which i dont, its a great thing to do for the here and now, and its a great qualification that you can take anywhere and you'll always find a job.
My music is where its at though. FOREAL HOMIE.
