John Gulino, based in Charlottesville, VA has quite an interesting background: Having played guitars/vocals in thrash metal bands for several years, he relocated to Oakland, California in ‘99 to immerse himself into the music, performance, art and culture by digesting acts like Idiot Flesh, Sleeptime Gorrilla Museum, The Residents, Matmos, Electric Birds, Ninewood, Mumble Peg et al. It wasn’t too long before John Gulino would adopt the Doofgoblin moniker and continually develop his experimental electronic frequencies with the acquisition of new gear and software. In the summer of 2001, Gulino relocated to the east coast to continue on his musical voyage. Finally, after a few self-released CD’s, Doofgoblin’s Marblebarrel album made its debut appearance on Unschooled Records in 2003 while Album-RL existed as an EP waiting patiently for a release date. With 6 tracks inside of a mere 17-minutes, Doofgoblin lets everything loose on Album-RL (an anagram for the county of Albemarle where Gulino resides).
Vintage synths are stretched to their limits on “Lovar,” minimal fractures of electro roll across the spectrum on “Round Peg,” while Doofgoblin’s warped melodic squeaks and tough percussion are found on the 2-minute “Stanards Last Raze.” “Bells And Allusions,” a precursor to the track that follows, is a moody, ambient drifter that unveils its subtle vibrations of bell tones and dizzying shards of debris. “Woodroof Solution,” (initially created for the Mixit contest at em411.com), is a compelling, sonic arrangement of five key samples including a Tibet bell (single hit), didgeridoo, Atari snare, hat, and kick. Closing this EP with the sounds of dishes being washed and a kitten batting a busy-ball, “Saturdum” is the viscerally imploding, cascading rhythm pulse of Album-RL.
Rhythmic, bass-heavy complexities, illusionary bells, broken electro and harsh digital distortions are all but a snapshot of what is exposed on this disc. Sound is collected, folded and punctuated by fluid abstraction, but what's around the next corner is rarely predictable from track to track. Collapsing the void between the innovative sounds of Richard Devine and Lexaunculpt, Doofgoblin assures his listeners that he’s in a similar league, constantly rearranging sound and its elements until nothing is left but the fury of its original intent.
In support of Marblebarrel, Doofgoblin played a string of mid-Atlantic and west coast shows from September through December of 2003. He’s currently doing remix work for Rusuden (Sonicterror Recordings) and label mate 30hz and plans to release new material in 2004 with a tour to follow. Watch out for future projects by Doofgoblin to include videos and collaborations on short films

Reviews:
(C' Ville, October 2003) "...Doofgoblin knows how to structure and pace his tracks and Marblebarrel is a promising debut..."
(Grooves Magazine #11) "...The microscopic sound of Doofgoblin's Marblebarrel leaps from tree to tree..."
(Igloo Magazine) "...Album-RL has a frenetic compressed feel to it as if Gulino has squashed down an hour of glitch dub music into a morsel that can be digested in a quarter of the time..."
