i'm trying to decide whether this is a post saying that you've been to egypt, or a post discussing some obscure IDM-track...

i got back yesterday. i've been on a nile cruise for a week, starting at Luxor, then to Aswan and back. Saw lots of ancient temples. Beautiful. Pics next week, but no digital ones (and no scanner here).
you wouldnt believe how well conserved it all was. there were hyroglyphics on every last bit of stone and you could practically take a bite out of em without anyone noticing. mmmmm...

who knows. there are people crazy enough to think that you could use powdered mummies for all sorts of medicine. might still be sold in some countries.
seriously though, i wish everyone who violates ancient egypt's treasures a slow and painful death. it hurt when i saw how the christians mutilated statues and wall carvings, and how tomb raiders smashed coffins to pieces just for a bit of gold. The worst was maybe the people who carved their names over a wall covered in hyroglyphics. you'd think i was joking, right? people are fucked up.
by the way, in case anyone wondered, i did not see the pyramids because they were too far away. but it's a reason for me to go back for sure.

Gotta see those pyramids man! Although it sounds like you took in quite a bit of the ancient culture in other areas. I would like to go there myself.

How are the people there? I've heard and seen some rather poor/nasty/annoying stuff.

poor, yes. Nasty, no not really, well the poor people aren't very clean of course but that makes sense.
Annoying, yes well extremely so in the tourist areas (which you obviously can't/shouldn't avoid) but since those are the only areas most of the majority will visit, the whole of the Egyptian people are judged on the people living in those locations.
But if you get off the tourist-beaten path you will meet very friendly people. I even got invited for dinner (and I humbly accepted) and a tour around the mudhouse of a poor family, they even gave me a present when I left. Knowing that they make shit for a living, I thought that was a pretty generous offer plus a wonderfully positive experience for me.
That said, it may be better to meet these kind of people first as after a couple of tourist sites you're gonna be one suspicious mofo. Plenty of swindlers to be found around the Gizeh plateau. and all the other major sites for that matter. It'll have you doubting wether that Egyptian's smile is sincere or if he's trying to sell you something in no time.

trust me, the cruise thing wasnt my first choice either, but as i was invited by my grandma to come along (with the rest of the family), i didn't really object. being on a boat full of germans for a whole week requires more than lots of patience though, no offense you german motherfuckers ;). either way, the week's program was more than worth it. besides, i am fucking lazy, so i wont object to lying in the sun and having someone to bring me a beer every once in a while ;)
the way i see it, this was a nice introduction to the country. i don't really mind the pushy behaviour of the tourist shop owners. it's just a game you have to play.
i guess if you like to travel, egypt is a must see.
