linux, is it worth it?

Mutant Death Pengwin from Medicine Hat on 2001-12-18 07:55 [#00062064]

should i give up 1.4 gigs for linux?
it is to my understanding that it is far faster than
windows. far more stable. and all around better than
windows.
is it?

arg. i have spent for ever just trying to install the damn
thing. anyone know how to boot from cd-rom on start up?

jand from Chelmsford,Essex,Uk on 2001-12-18 10:32 [#00062085]

Mutant...you'll need to go into the SETUP routine on your
computer & set the relevant boot options: How you get into
setup is diff depending on your make of PC but when it boots
you should get a message like "To Enter SETUP, Press
Del"..or something like that....

Be careful in there tho, it's pretty easy to change stuff
accidently...

some games need special patches and stuff, so be careful is
you play a lot og games

actually, i checked out my bios and i cant figure out how to
get it to boot from cd rom, i am pretty sure that i have to
change a file.
i am planning to use linux and windows. apparently at boot
up you choose whether you want to load windows or linux.

jand from Chelmsford,Essex,Uk on 2001-12-18 12:26 [#00062109]

In most of the BIOS i've seen it's labelled as Boot Order &
is something like "A:, C:, D:" or "D:,C:A:"...

In others it mentions "Floppy, HD, CD"...

LINUX is full of stuff like this and if you're not a total
IT Geek, it can be very hard going getting it operating
correctly...

tune^fx on 2001-12-18 21:30 [#00062241]

hey, try Mandrake Linux. Easy for babies. I use it to work,
can't live without it.
It even has a gamer version, with GNU flight simulator,
lotta OpenGL arcades, and some other stuff.
