It's a way of sharing files. basically you download a file and the part of that file you have downloaded is automatically immediately shared (real-time y0)

yeah, but you can do that with other p2p programs too....just by setting your download directory as an upload/shared directory
i've heard people talking about files in BitTorrent format......i'm assuming that means you need BiTorrent to open them....why does it use a proprietry format? (if this is the case)

it's not the case, as far as i know. if you want to upload a file, the program adds an extension to the filename to make it recognizable by bittorrent for downloading. but as soon as you start downloading it, the extension is irrelevant. you don't need bittorrent to open a file, once it is downloaded, it is a normal file.

with other p2p software a file isn't uploadable until it's completed.
if you have downloaded, say, 10% of a file then that 10% is immediately shared
