One of our fellow board members pointed out that a track
that i had been creating (Jelli) was unoriginal. I totally
saw where he was coming from, but it made me feel bad as he
makes amazing tunes and i can't match up to it. I know that
there will always be someone better than you, but thats not
the point.

I looked back over alot of the tracks that i have been
making recently. Dreamt (which on Xltvibes 7 i believe) and
other un-released tracks are heavy rip-offs of Boards of
Canada and other ambient works. The first track mentioned
(Jelli) used a distorted 303 line and used the amen break
and a few other popular Drum and bass breaks, which is a
rip-off of umpteen other artists.

My question is: Does anyone else feel bad when they create
something that is only gonna be catagroized in theshadow of
another person?

i dont even care about that. my ideas are original and my
own. if someone else thinks it sounds a little too much like
something else, thats fine for them. i just do what i feel
from within, everything else takes a backseat to that when
im creating.

I don't care either. I make music I want to listen to.
Everyone has their own "take" on a sound or style and who is
to say that your style won't be adopted and adapted by
someone else...it is how music (and most other stuff)
progresses.

Never allow anyones opinion discourage you, especially on a
work in progress. There can be many other factors
influencing their opinion (possible jealousy, different
taste in music and so on)

i make lots of music, but only 1/10 songs make it out of my
computer (i have 500 songs at home, so that's 50 songs that
have left my computer). the ones that don't make it are shit
or too similar to something i've heard before.

Some of the best song I have heard sound instantly familiar
even if they are totally original. It is daft to delete
anything. Do artists worry about painting hills and trees
because someone has done that before? no, because they know
they are leaving their style on the finished peice.

wouldnt it be nice to set up a page at wire or whatever
where everyone can upload, or let slurp from another site,
their music too. that'd be easier to check out than
searching old threads with peoples music????

Don't worry about it too much. People will always compare
your music to other artists. It happens to big names too;
People compare Freescha to BoC etc.

but if you make a song, and then you realize you've only
made something you've heard before, do you keep working on
it?

I have heard once, from my buddy, that one track made by me
is not original...
I am always trying to avoid copying others ideas.

song and that person DIDNT write this, I DID

its annoying, for sure.

You spend alot of time and put alot of heart into something,
only to have others shrug it off as a ripoff, or
unoriginal.

Fuck that. Do what you do. If it happens to be
boundry-pushing, you'll get the recognition you deserve, if
not, then it doesnt matter, because it wasnt your intent
anyways. Your intent was to make music that you like, and
youve accomplished that.

Music as of late, seems to be a bit too obessesed with being
"new"... but I rather listen to the beatles, from almost 40
years ago, because it is good music, then listen to *insert
some dsp-wankfest artist here* that makes unheard of sounds,
but fails to capture enough emotion (subjective i know).

My point is, do what you think is right. You cannot please
everyone, so you might as well please yourself.

I totally agree with that. I must admit that recently i have
been having the same problem by thinking that everything i
do is a rip off. It really dosen't matter to me now becuase
you have to enjoy what you make if you become to critical
because then it takes all of the fun out of it.

ive resided to the fact i may never make something truly
original but i enjoy making music and thats all that matters
to me

to be fair there has only been a handfull of truly original
artists

everybody hails afx but eno made ambient 10yrs+ before him
and so on

I did enjoy making the track, but then he said it and it
kinda put a huge downer on me.

Just asking, has anyone actually listened to the track? I
did post a link to it

i just make music that i would want to listen to. i don't
think anyone has ever told me my tracks sounded like a
rip-off of something else.

you say you only spent 30 minutes writing that track? maybe
you just got to have more patience in developing your style
spend more time on your tracks, add more detail. put more of
yourself into each track. i often take months to write a
single track.

thread?

well i definitely recognize the break beat. there isn't
really anything else much going on in the track to call it a
rip off of anything though. as a work in progress, it
sounds like an ok start, but as for originality, yeah you're
gonna have to change up that beat, or distort it or swap it
out or bury it under other beats or it's just going to sound
like any other DnB or break track. You are really going to
have to be groundbreaking to do anything original in a genre
where everything sounds the same.

Actually your track was a little unoriginal :D

You just seem to have slotted together existing breaks with
no real adjustment or trickery. However don't let that stop
you from finishing it. You just have to make it your own
now :D

don't let it bother you. the truth is, every artist starts
someone, and that is usually on ground other artists have
already trampled over endlessly. think of it as learning -
you start with something familiar, then develop off it,
until you are off that familar ground and you've found that
path less travelled by, and that makes all the difference.
(Robert Frost was a wise man.)

And besides, remember for EVERY idea, no matter how original
it may seem, has been thought of by someone else at least
200 times. It's not really the originality of the idea at
all - it's the way you express and construct it that
characterizes your creations.
