My second favourite Artificial Intelligence release (besides
Incunabula).. totally funky, a little bit of ambient, and
very very techno. It's what braindance is all about, imo.
Brilliant release.

I need to buy this. I've never head it, but heard so much
about it.

it's listed on amazon. do a search for *b12 electro soma* on
google and the first few results seem to say they have it.
not sure that they actually do though, but it's worth a shot

What I don't like about B12 in general is that they wrap
their tracks around a 4/4 beat most of the time. Not just
the time signature, but 4-on the floor 909 kicks. The CD
does start off with 'Soundtrack of Space', which is just
synth strings and pads. Nothing spectacular.

My fave track here is 'Static Emotion', which seems to be a
shorter alternative version of 'Basic Emotion'. It's also
the shortest track. I like 'Debris', 'Bio Dimension' and
'Basic Emotion' also. Most of the songs on this CD have bits
and pieces that are brilliant, but then the house beat comes
along.

I suppose 'Basic Emotion' is the most famous track from this
CD. It reminds a little about 'Infinite Lites' from their
follow up CD.

There is nothing wrong with the use of the 909! You are
right, most if not all B12 (and aliases) material uses that
as a basis. But...that's because B12 are Techno. That's
how Techno sounded back in the late 80's and early 90's.
Don't associtae B12 with...you know the likes of AE or
something. Very few of their songs could be considered
anything but Techno. At the time the press regarded them as
a very futuristic sounding Detroit Techno. I dunno, as I
have said many times, there is NOTHING wrong with a good
beat in a song. All this blarg about a song not being
"listening" oriented or something is annoying.

Btw - Awesome release. This is some of the best sounding
Techno around. 'Metropolis' and 'Obsessed' are my
favorites. I suggest tracking down all their old releases
on their very own B12 label and even some scattered stuff on
ART. The Vinyls are enxt to impossible to get your hands
on, so I would just use slsk...unless you get really lucky.

You're right, there's nothing wrong with the 909. I just get
the feeling, when hearing all the great synthwork, that they
could've gone much further. Some of the tracks sound very
much like Juan Atkins (Model 500), but Atkins just has that
less is more approach when it comes to synths and IMO it
just comes out as better tracks.

But yeah, you're right, this is an old release.

Prior to 1995, it was illegal not to use a 909...

Anyways, I got this when it first appeared and I must admit
I wasn't overly impressed...workmanlike is one way of
putting it...

I had to write somewhere about this, my all time
favourite
album. I bought it when it came out sometime
in 1993 as it was part of Warp's peerless A.I. series, put
it on and then began the rest of my listening life. To say
it is immaculate is an understatement. It is breathtaking in
it's scope; sleek, human, mechanical, futuristic, nostalgic,
spacey and earthbound. Some say they are Detroit copyists,
for me they fulfill all the promise of Detroit that other
"genuine" acts fell at the final hurdle attempting to
achieve, or were not aware were possible. I still listen
regularly to this album, and all the Redcell and early B12
stuff i can find on slsk, to this day, over ten years on.
Only one more album followed this, which was more of the
same, pristine electronica. I am so sad they stopped
producing more music, and at the same time, kind of glad
that their legacy remains untarnished. This was the future I
am still hoping to see.

Nice post. I agree, I feel that B12 are the best Techno
group (Techno in it's pure form) ever. Right now, I have
all their songs playing in Winamp that weren't on their Warp
releases. It's sad to know that they don't make music
anymore (unless they do, and no one knows?), but like you
said it's also a relief to know that they can't mess up with
any future releases. Amazing how they progressed the
Detroit sound, and only a few picked up on them. Listen to
some interview questions on Prelude Part 1. No one wanted
to give them a record deal back then because Techno seemed
to be dead, hence they started B12 label.

I don't blame them throwing in the towel, if that's what
they did. I was lucky enough to pick up "Prelude pt. 1" in a
second hand shop, again i would give away most of my
collection before parting with this. I wish they would bring
out a nice release collecting their old 12"s. I found a
track the other day on slsk, from a Warp compilation,
"Infosphere", and i was so happy to hear a something i
hadn't heard before from them. I do rave about them a bit
much but that's only because i don't think they get the
credit they deserve.

Please do. Anything by B12 or their other alias Redcell is
just lush, lush electronica at its finest. You cannot go
wrong sir.

I've had Time Tourists on CD for ages, and I just picked up
Electro Soma off of bleep.com...

Let me just say WOW. This album is so good it's sick. The
Detroit influence is huge, of course. But in my book that's
a good thing.
