pawn shops, buddy!

i scored a used, good condition Alesis SR-16 for $250 a
couple of years ago. Alesis seems like the best to me, then
again I've never had my hands on a decent Roland.

they are limited to a 1/32 quantize as other older drum
machines (yamaha rx-11 for example) have a 1/64. although
the memory on older drum machines is really weak. plus your
limited to the sounds of it. i have both an es-1 and a
yamaha rx-11. you can set up all the sequences on the yamaha
and trigger the es-1 with midi. it's a good combo but the
yamaha is still very limited with it's memory. i'd give a
couple different ones playing around (if you know a place
where you can) and then pick what you like best.

I started out with a Yamaha RY-30. I think it is completely
FM synthesis and sounds pretty old school. Kind of a
click/tone analog feel. It still gets use occasionally
although it needs a new plug.

One thing I would love to do if I ever had the money would
be to collect old gear. So much of it has its own
personality and very distinctive unique sounds.
