I would like to own some 'church music' i.e slow organ songs that are quite somber (or sombre?)
Anyone know of some?

I know nothing about this kind of music. The closest thing I can think of is squarepusher - song: our underwater torch. Apart from that I might as well do a cartwheel and eat a playstation.

Proper church stuff. A bit too "up" for the sort Murray is probably looking for. Positive stuff like "amazing grace" as opposed to real doom and gloom hymns. I was a choirboy for years, I still reckon my church has my favourite accoustics.

Certain tracks off of Beck's Mutations album remind me of church music; namely dead melodies. Ok, that's really the only one.

cool, we should persuade him to put some of it online! Music does have a unique sound when played in a Church I agree, I guess it depends on the layout of the church, but the ones I have been in vary from making the sound very warm and comforting to feeling cold and empty.

Mine is almost all stone, high ceiling and gothic arches all over the shop. Gives a good "cathedral" type quality to the sound.

What you are looking for is almost anything by Messiaen, you won't believe how amazing some of his pieces are, he taught Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez their tricks. It's not all wanky nonsense, some of it's really powerfull.

I'll have to get back to you on that.. all those cd's are packed away in my new house. try a "messiaen organ" search in soulseek. If you get the ones where he's playing in the church that he played in they're amazing!

church music is awesome. This one song called "jesus" is great. The main reason I like aphex's logan witch rock is the churchish organish melody. gargoyles quest 2 for nes actually is church musicish in that it has polyphony of droning notes which make rich chords.

What I want is an album of the exact classical music they play on ren and stimpy. That stuff is great. Bill Griggs is the guy listed in the credits for doing the music (aside from primus doing the main theme).

i enjoy church music. especially the kind that has a sort of dark-ish undertone to it.. i can't really think of an example, or a suggestion of some good church music that i am aware of.
i'd just go to a church somewhere and listen.
