Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K

del from hertipol on 2001-12-17 22:28 [#00061954]

Did anyone outside of the UK ever get their mitts on one of
these? Even better anyone still possess the 16k model - only
the por kids I'll bet.

If not, you may not remember the humble beginnings of
computer driven sound and music. Simple beeps emmitting from
a puny speaker (you could amp up the line out via connector
to the tape deck you'd be using to load software).

If you did have one of these "Dead Flesh" marvels which
game(s) would you say had the best music -

would it be the old staccato beep fest that was "JSW" or
the croaky blue danube of "Manic Miner". I recall weeing my
kegs when the first 2 channel music came out "Fairlight" and
"Gyroscope". I recall the spectrum manual(for the 48k
version, not the 16k version) had the "tab" for a mahler
symphony and a cool hangman program in Basic.

My favourite saturday afternoon passtime was to type
RANDOMIZE USR 1303 into the display speccys at Dixons and
laugh at the queues of sad speckless waifs wait interminable
hours for a game to load. Bwaha. Thems was the days like.

What then?

1-Fairlight
2-Cosmic Wartoad
3-Gyroscope
4-Avalon's pause music
5-a game whose name eludes me but was like a big 3d effect
shooter in the stylke of "Tron" that seemed like it had
three or more channels/voices on it.

del...you are my Twin, mate!!...

I used to do that RAND USR thing as well, I didn't think too
many people knew about that little speccy feature; coupled
with a "Kong is Loading" bit of text...(I've seen kids wait
for over an hour the game to load...)...

I remember learning to program out of a book and using the
computers in Debanhams & Dixons to type programs in to try
em out...

And the Xmas I finally got a 48K Spectrum was the best Xmas
ever...

I never had a ZX Spectrum but when i was ,like, ten or
something, i taught myself to program c-64 textbased rpgs,
and cheesy electronic tunes aswell. Lots of fun there.
