have you ever seen this guys magic? ive read about him and
seen him on tv a few times, i JUST finished watching his
show "Street Magic" and i was great, mostly card tricks and
stuff, which I have seen been done in real life before, and
they always blow me away.. especially in real life. fucked
up stuff....

but... he does that levitation stuff, right out on the
streets and stuff, and people are amazed, now the same man
who showed me all these card tricks (some street kid from
montreal) could levitate too, but not as much as david
blaine does,,, he could only get off the ground like an
inch, but david blaine can get like 8 inches off the
ground..

anyone know anything about this? if its totally real or some
crazy ass scam? because when I saw it in real life it looked
totally real and it was just so random and in my job, at
work i mean there was no way there were strings or mirrors
or anything.... crazy.

OK REFLEX, Rule Number 1: Anything you 'see' on TV can
never be trusted 100%.

I would have trouble telling you how to do the levitation
trick, it is really something that I would have to show
you.

When you see David Blaine levitate about 1 foot in the air,
what you are actually seeing is fake. He uses strings to get
this high. However he does perform the basic levitation
trick (the one that you or I could do) in front of a live
audience. The film crew record the response of the people
watching (it is real surprise and shock because the basic
trick does look really cool ) .

Next they take a separate filming of him being lifted by
strings/wires, they then get a false crowd of people to
dress up like the original surprised onlookers and just edit
the two bits of film together. (Notice you will only see
their clothes, arms , legs etc, and very little of their
faces in the slow motion replay)

I don't know why he feels the need to go extra high by using
wires or why he doesn't pay a fake audience in the first
place (maybe the shock and surprise can not be faked?)

he's hilarious for the simple fact that he provokes such a
strong response from people.
thats what he thrives on (that, and the money of course)..

when he was here in the uk doing the 'suspended in a glass
box' publicity-stunt/performance-piece (depending on your
opinion of him).. EVERYONE was talking about him nonstop.
some people were saying how great they all thought it was. a
lot of people were getting really angry about it all though.
they said it was distasteful. they said it was egocentric.
they said it was fake. they said he was mad..
none of them stopped to think that this kind of furore is
exactly what he wanted.
because, love him or hate him, he was not out of the news
the entire duration of his (actually rather boring)
endurance test. thousands turned up to see the finale.
i just find it funny that the majority of the hype was
generated by the people that hate him.
i dont know why it didnt occur to them that the best way to
deal with someone like him if you dont like him is to ignore
him.. like the attention seeking kid in school.

but he won.
he always does.
people that generate such a vitriolic attack + sustain their
public image based on peoples hatred of them amuse me.

True, i can not be certain that this is how he does this. It
is just one possible way that was described on tv, the logic
made sense to me where as thinking that he does have magical
powers does not seem very likely. I think he is great to
watch, I enjoy the reactions that people give more than the
actual magic but I am still glad he is on tv. Has anyone in
the UK seen that MAX MAGIC on Sky1? Same sort of thing but
more for a laugh.

dont know about all the levitation tricks , but the
card/pilfering routines he does are amazing ... unless its
all faked for tv of course ... the one in particular where
the woman picks a card , and then its sticking to the inside
of the window of a restaurant across the street .. wtf is
that shit ?

your all missing the thing im saying though

IVE seen in REAL life these sorts of card tricks, and the
levitation thing, how do you do the levitation thing in real
life only like 1 inch of the ground? I saw it in real life
right in front of me once, well he did it twice. And ive
seen these sorts of crazy card tricks in real life, quite
astonishing.

The levitation one is where you stand with your body at an
angle to the people watching, you then lift yourself up
using the foot furthest away from the people watching. From
their angle it looks as though both feet are hovering, but
the ball of the foot furthest away from them is firmly on
the ground.

There was a show David Blaine did with Leo DiCaprio where he
explained it all. He said the levitation shown on TV was
done using wires for "dramatic effect" but the reactions of
the people shown where from when he did the ball of the foot
version.

He demonstrated all his tricks other than the card ones
which he said he would never give the secrets away of.

It's stupid, really. I bought Above the Below on DVD
recently and included was a similar magic special centred
around the NY Vertigo stunt. I'd never really seen Blaine
perform before, but thought it wouldn't be so bad. It's
incredibly odd how people believe all this. Every trick ends
with the onlookers explaining the trick, "man, he just... he
just, and then, he just, and then the bottle filled, oh, up,
woah... how'd he do that?" Every trick ends with the
onlooker saying something like that. I hate Blaine so much
now, he's so stupid. I dribble, I dribble. There's one trick
where he supposedly fills up an empty can and the can, you
see on the DVD, appears full and like new only after it's
been offscreen for a moment (camera lifts up above it, but
it's not supposed to be noticable as camera was shaky whole
time), the two picnicers still look on in awe though which
makes me think onlookers often know.

i dont think ive seen any blaine tricks..but the illusions
david copperfield has done have been impressive..walking
thru the china wall, making the statue of liberty dissapear,
flying, teleporting etc...must have been a big job to plan
and stage all these big illusions.

its interesting how magicians are the most sceptic when it
comes to supernatural things...or then its just an act to
keep the true ancient art of magic secret....

its the mystery that grabs you and keeps you paying
admission for the magic show, when you know how it works,
you just go "oh, so thats how...well, bye"....when u think
about it, magicians are really like women, you figure em out
and realize they're the same as all the others, hollow
talk-machines they are
