i have a really major thing about light

i really love certain ambient lighting conditions, and i
don't understand why.

it's mainly outdoor ambient light, for example when we had
the solar eclipse a few years back - the lighting outside
was MAD!

it also applies to video/photos. i LOVE the work of Chris
Cunningham because of the use of filters and lighting in his
work, i also like Mark Romanek for his work on One Hour
Photo (even though the film was really slow, it was shot
brilliantly)

does anyone else have the same liking as me?

yeah, some of the best creativity for visual media comes
from imaginative use of light. i'm always noticing
interesting/effective/gripping lighting conditions
throughout my everyday life.

and if you love light, do you have to love shadow as well? i
think maybe you do, but i could be wrong.

incredible. yes, definately.
i love on rainy days, closing the blinds in a room, and
looking at the light that comes through. it's really
interesting.... i have a really awesome pic i took, but i
don't have premium.... but i'm sure you can picture it.
heh.

really the contrast, which is why i almost always prefer
black & white photography.

yeah, i love black and white, especially film

but i like the modern black and white, because people use
unusual filters and stuff nowadays and it makes it look
slightly different

without being too technical, i think i do. some of the old
style black & white is kind of boring and flat. (that's the
second time i've used that expression today!)

is the concept too
;)

i wish i had some pics online, but i was obsessed with light
for at least two years, probably longer, and i took photos
outside at night like crazy. i had a reputation in my
school for making completely normal places look like horror
movies and close encounters of the third kind. (btw this is
all without using any filters except for the filter pack in
the enlarger, ie color "balancing" filters, there is
something called reciprocity failure that fucks with film,
esp. color film) it was great while it lasted but now i
have no access to a color darkroom. i CAN recommend some
great pictures to look at: Brassai's Paris at Night ("Paris
a Nuit"), Richard Misrach (particularly his "Sky Book"),
Gregory Crewdson who may be best remembered by non-artists
for making the photo on the cover of Yo La Tengo's "And Then
Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out", Todd Hido and Michael
Kenna. If you like that crap i highly recommend a visit to
thenocturnes.com, some of the stuff in their gallery is
crap, but the site EXTENSIVE.

Light is great, though I really don't like the sun at all.
It's nice when it's going down or coming up, but I don't
like daytime shots.

One of my favorite things is the recent advances in video
game lighting. It's prettier than real life. Can't wait to
see what kind of light source/shadow eyecandy there'll be in
Pandora Tomorrow.

There's another book by Richard Misrach that will totally
fuckin blow yr mind (<-hyperbole). It's called "Golden
Gate", I think. He just shot the same exact view from his
house of San Francisco Bay over and over again, but the
different lighting effects are amazing. Some are long
exposures and some are just pretty sunset pictures, but it's
definitely worth a look.

All these photos are a bit lovely, aren't they?

If you're interested in light, check out an artist called
james turrell... he's been overseeing a huge installation
carved from the rock of the roden crater in arizona for
ages. The idea is to use the natural light at certain times
of the year to produce these amazing effects, like feeling
you're floating up into the ceiling etc.

He's been creating a network of tunnels, stairs, elliptical
rooms and a perfectly even crater's rim in order to "see
celestial events with new eyes, to return the vaulted shape
to the sky, to bring the sky down to Earth."

His work with ganzfelds is cool too, a lighting effect where
it's hard to perceive depth or position... just rooms of
entirely deep blue light or whatever, they're very beautiful
but kind of unsettling.
