the problem with drum+bass..

offline acrid milk hall from United Kingdom on 2004-02-17 03:49 [#01076139]

don't get me wrong. i enjoy a bit of d+b when im out as
much as the next (wo)man..
but i really don't even contemplate buying d+b releases
these days. i bought a few of the 'seminal' albums a few
years ago.. but not any more.
i think the reason is that, by+large, artist-driven
drum+bass albums are largely disappointing. they seem to
feature one or two tunes you might have heard in a club
sandwiched between a lot of filler. the producer's artistic
intentions sometimes seem to exceed their abilities + it
just cant sustain interest beyond a few listens.
there are a few exceptions to this, of course.. but even
they dont have unlimited appeal.
the other problem i find is that the shops are full of d+b
mix albums. most have the same tunes on. and its mainly all
contemporary stuff with the same old 'classics' throw on.
hardly inspires you to keep paying good money for them.
in the end, what you really want are the tunes YOU like.
but, as i dont dj anymore+i sold my decks in lieu of when im
old+rich+can afford technics, im not going to trawl through
the records shops week after week buying 12"s + white
labels.

does anyone else see what i mean?
i just think the drum+bass 'community' seems to sell itself
short through overexposure: for instance, EVERY weekend here
in th uk youre garuanteed to find the same d+b djs playing
up+down the country. im not saying i want a situation where
you have to wait years to see your favourite djs play.. but
maybe familiarity does breed contempt after a while..?
same faces, same tracks, week in, week out..
and not a truly innovated artist-led album in too long.

you totally right .... today^s produced dnb has a small
range.... it all goes the same way, there is no more
characterful shit.. sometimes i ask me if that is dnb ... (i
mostly miss the BASS) it just goes compressed. the most
stuff i heard in the last times sounds like died jungle.

simple drum and bass shits me immensly

drill and bass (sqpsher/vsnares) I think has a lot more
integrity and more brilliance to it, I'd buy a good drill
record anyday

i can enjoy some dark uptempo drumm n bass, but i too only
bought like 10 d'n'b albums...it all sounds too much alike
for my likings, and somehow i never was into it. i got quite
some albums to check few days ago, i gave it a rapid listen
and it sounded quite excellent actually, tho it's more a
music to listen to in a club imo. i wonder what i'll think
of all those albums cuz some of it sounded quite nasty.

I have always thought this. The drum and bass peeps release
killer 12's but they rarely feature on albums they release
which tend to be a collection of tracks they seem to think
will make a good album. I know this is controversial but I
think by and large the innovation in the scene died a while
ago, and it is just futile treading at the moment. None of
the new stuff sounds radically different to the stuff being
released between 94-97.

Personally the only two drum and bass albums that I still
really love are Dom & Roland - Industry and Kemet Crew -
Champion Jungle Sound.

You are right about the mix CD's as well. One thing that
really annoys me is the renaming of old tracks, or the name
of the mix, to make them look new on the track listing. It
has happened quite a few times with stuff I have bought.
It's a pity because I have been into the d'n'b scene since
it first started.

Yes, I have far more DnB 12" singles and EPs than albums.
Only got 1 dnb album come to think of it. Roni size has the
right idea (vinyl version of the last album was as 3/4 *
A/AA 2 tracks).

that roni size reprazent - new forms still sounds excellent
to me- the whole album, im not sure if it's drum n bass
tho...

that's some wacky advertising idea,... very original, most
of those types of events have flyer that try to look
hardcore and just look ugly and stupid

New Form the 2CD version is OK. Good in parts. In The Mode
was shit beyond belief. Any after that I haven't bothered
listening to.

The album they released on XL wasn't that good either.

one of the very rare orgs who booked hellfish and i:gor for

breakcore event here ...

yeah i hear ya on this one. the plus point of drum & bass is
that cute girls love it so drum & bass nights are excellent
plus dancing to drum&bass is fun coz its so easy. not like
real dancing more like moshing maybe, well not quite but
different if ya dig me.

i don't listen to drum&bass at home tho coz its boring as
fuck. after enjoying drillnbass, drum n bass just leaves me
cold

You cant listen to IDM before a big night. And club music
for me sucks ass, so it HAS to be a bit of Dj Hype. Ah
bliss.

Speaking of this, i went to homelands last year and the drum
and bass tent was the biggest piece of shit then music was
crap and i can better Dj better than half of those
"professional" Djs man it was so shit.

I have no problem d'n'b but half of the stuff the mainstream
dj's plays is utter wank. No black sun empire, spy
technologies and eastside and those are the labels that are
putting out the good stuff. Mind you i haven't checked out
moving shadow for a while.

i went to 'technicality' by introspective records the other
night, from what id heard it was the 'intelligent' more
'advanced' drum n bass.... i was hoping it would be better
than it turned out...

it was ok , nothing special, just lots of drum variation,
not even soundmurderer style, but more acoustic drums like a
load of unfinished unwanted SQP tracks

for me its not even really an issue of experimentalism or
progression. some of the 'straight'/'pure' drum+bass tunes
pack the most punch.. its just that none of the producers
seem to be capable of producing enough to fill an lp.

and then of course, theres the fact that tunes are played
out 12-18 months before they even make it onto commercially
available vinyl.. then they give them a full cd release +
shoot a video another 6months later : by which stage, the
cracks in the tune have started to show + just as national
radio is fawning over this 'innovative' new track, everyone
that actually goes to d&b nights is sick of it.

4hero - two pages/ creating paterns
goldie - timeless/ saturn returnz
roni size - new forms

Initially I was really really disappointed with it, but as
time has gone on there are tracks that I do really like on
it. The mother disc is a throwaway from me, but disk 2 has
a few decent moments on it. It has become more of a
nostalgia disc for me though as I got it during a strange
part of my life and it takes me back every time I hear it.

I've never really liked D&B, i think i've got three albums
in my collection, I find it really dull; going to D&B
parties is fun for one hour, then i've had enough of it,

azatoth233 | yeah, definitely.
the majority of d&b i own is vinyls from when i used to dj.
its fun for a night out, but it doesnt really work for me
for home listening.

princo | you sound dangerously like someone's parent in your
last post. :)
ps. no pills for me thanks. help yourself though.

ecnadniarb | there was a period a while ago when a lot of
d&b which relied heavily of 4/4 rhythms was being played
out. pretty dark stuff. is this what you class as tech-step?
