Well, Natalie Portman *sighs happily* has signed on to do a sequel to Luc Besson's "Leon: The Professional"
I think that will be rad. Nat the cleaner...

blowfield : more info on burton here. i'm sure you'll have seen something on this list.
qrter : agreed. i don't understand how some people think sequels are a good idea. somethings are just better left alone.
oddioblender : i'm sure theres already a thread about big fish somewhere here already.

Agreed. The Professional is one of those films that is best left to stand on its own. Besides, it wouldn't be the same without Jean Reno.

true. but its not just about whether reno's in it or not.. personally, i like films/stories to be a snapshot of the moment. you don't neccessarily need all the back history. and you certainly don't need to know what happens afterwards.
in the case of leon - we leave the story with matilda planting leon's plant in her boarding school grounds. i don't need/want to know whether she stayed at school + led a more normal life after that, or whether she continued to train alone + become a hit(wo)man.. i can use my imagination and make my own mind up about it.
im sure you feel the same way.
sometimes, this kind of patronising extension of the story happens within one film - without even having a sequel come along to spoil it all. prime example (in my opinion) was 'minority report'. if i'd been making it, i'd have ended the film with the ariel shot of ********* dead on the balcony with ********* standing over him + guests crowding around. but spielberg thought it would be a nice idea to give us an extra 5 mins of sentimental bullshit in order to tie up all the loose ends. anyone with a degree of imagination could have guessed what happened to all the principal characters. no need for the patronising voice over + wistful looks to camera.
spoilt what could have been a decent film.

i love his visual style, whether or not the subject matter of the film is particularly to my taste.
sometimes i just wish the screenplays/scripts were a little stronger.

I'm concerned about this one, it will be very difficult for anyone to top the '71 version. I sincerily hope that Burton and Depp don't ruin themselves and the magic of the original film by making a mediocre remake here. Although I'm interested in the fact that it is going to stick closer to the novel, i hope the schnozberrys still taste like schnozberrys, nahmean?
