Plaid - Spokes...why the lukewarm reviews?

All I want to say is that Plaid's new one does not warrant
these withered reviews.

I'm all for Plaid. They're the ones who are keeping IDM
fun. IDM isn't all about snacketty-clicky aural assaults.
Plaid keep it bouncy and ridiculously beautiful.

And Parts in the Post is the best remix album EVER!

their best album so far is rest proof clockwork. spokes is
still good, but if you compare with other plaid releases it
is one of their weakest.

the remix album i only heard some samples. it sounds good. i
like the AIFOL remix for björk.

the media gave bad reviews about the album, and at first i
agreed, but after a time i liked the album more than at the
beginning, but it has some weak points. it sounds too....
retro

totally not true.

Spokes is an excellent albums, only the hardcore Plaid fans
bother with the back-to-TBD style. Spokes is different, yet
better than their other efforts. It's all about your
personal opinion, but NEVER say it's their weakest, cause
that's a totally inadequate answer.

sure in my opinion, what do you think? i was disappointed
because i expected they would continue from double figure to
something more plaid, but what spokes is (imo), is a attempt
to sound like not for the threes or trainer, but with new
equipment and some years more experience.

as i said it is a good album, but if you compare it with
other plaid releases it is one of their weakest (imo) :D

It's my favorite Plaid album, it's been in my stereo much
more than their other albums. It's appreciated much more by
me when I read that interview where they revealed some of
the techniques used in making Spokes, Crumax Rins was the
sounds of an old vintage Crumax synth dying, and the beats
in Quick Emix are filtered bat calls.

I think the reason it was given lukewarm reviews (in the
mainstream music press anyway) is because it isn't
neccesarily a step forward, its just a mixture of older
Black Dog style sound with mature production. Plus it's not
exciting or raw music to write about, like perhaps
Squarepusher or Aphex are but it is really nice pleasing IDM
with a kind of updated A.I. sound. Very good though.

opinion, that's a scientifically proven fact.

I can see why it would bore some people, personally i think
there are Three really blinding tracks on this.

Even spring
Cedar city
Marry

The rest are a little bit lacking in one area or another but
they are still good.

The spokes material also works very well live.

Spokes nonetheless.

B Born Droid and Crumax Rins are classic Plaid. Marry is
good but it's not the only good thing on there as many
people have said.

> can you show us the scientific proof then? ; )

(no, seriously i like Spokes very much - but this sentence,
"it's not just my opinion, it's a fact" is just getting on
my nerves... because it's never true... just being
pretentious =))

I think it might be their best album.

The only reason people don't like it is because all of a
sudden it's not cool to like Plaid anymore. I swear some IDM
fans will hate anything that's actually listenable now.

offline eXXailon from purgatory on 2004-02-15 13:20 [#01074392]

relax uzim, I'm just fucking about :)

I know a lot of the folks here dont like spokes as much as
double figure or another plaid release. however, what pisses
me off is people saying they dont really like spokes because
it sounds different than previous plaid albums. i find it
pretty damn impressive enough how plaid manages to innovate
and improve their music while still keeping that authentic
plaid sound intact.

on top of that I just think spokes is technically the best
plaid release, and some of the separate tracks on spokes
move me more than 'rest proof clockwork' or 'not for threes'
as a whole.

offline blowfield on 2004-02-15 13:59 [#01074438]

so you think plaid has equal good albums? i mean everyone
has his favs and mine is rest proof clockwork. even as a
aphex twin "fan" (is IDM a genre where you can call someone
fan?) i think he has his less good and his better albums.

this doesn't mean, i don't listen to his weaker stuff.

plaid is cool, there is no doubt, and i will still love them
for centuries, but after listening to 3 albums of them, i
chose what is my fav. plaid sound, and what i expected was
that plaid would make a better album (p-brane ep was good!
such like i expected).

plaid is a band making albums which sound different... you
cannot compare double figure with not for the threes for
example, but you know from the very first moment it is
plaid. this is also the case with spokes, so it is good for
me, i really like it, but if you compare it with their other
releases it is weaker. what means i love their other
releases more than this, not that it is trash.

does plaid have equally good albums? i don't think so, not
for me anyway. i like spokes better than RPC or NF3s, or
even double figure. same goes for me: i'm not saying the
other albums are trash but I prefer spokes way over
RPC/NF3s/DF/etc.

It's 'Plad' .. never heard anyone pronounce it otherwise.
Nevertheless, I must agree with eXXailon here.. I think all
Plaid is most definitely NOT created equal. I didn't even
like Plaid *until* they came out with Spokes.. this latest
effort is what won me over. Before that, I just thought of
them as bland melodic techno musicians attempting to make
IDM. This isn't so far off I don't think .. especially when
you listen to maddeningly repetative and rather dull works
like Trainer. This is gonna open a new can of worms.. I
know there are alot of Trainer lovers here.. but seriously..
I think Spokes was a definite step in the right direction.

spokes is one of the best IDM albums i've heard, and i think
that you are right when you say it is just different. kind
of like the 2nd album syndrome; stay the same are you are a
one trick pony - do it different and people says you are
abondoning your roots.
