for some reason I've been a bit curious on englands first
female prime minister, apparantly she stirred up a lot of
trouble in england before and during her term as prime
minister, and I thought that rather than looking up a
documentary site or something, I'd try get some first hand
info from some of the uk people,

so tell me,.. what the hell did she do?

The unions were taking the piss with their demands and the
country was pretty much fucked up by strikes. She responded
by utterly destroying the mining communities.

Yes, that was when it got really bad and the country nearly
fell apart- rubbish wasn't taken away, electricity was
sporadic, stores would often run low on certain things.

Sus laws were also introduced which caused the residents of
Toxteth, Liverpool to riot, and Maggie sent Gunboats up the
Mersey. :P

Mersey is the river Liverpool is built on...Toxteth is about
2 to 3 miles inland so I don't quite see what she thought it
would acheive.

The Sus laws were that the police could operate an
indescriminate stop and search policy without probable cause
for concern. The black youth population of Toxteth were
being unfairly targeted and as a result the riots occured,
with residents of every ethnic group protesting.

During the riots people died, including one elderly black
male who had a tear gas canister fired into his stomach by
the police (which should never have happened because the
canister should have been fired upwards to drop into the
crowd).

Thatcher was like Reagan in a dress...

Possibly one of the few politicians I've had any amount of
HATRED for...

Or as the great Morrissey put it...

"The Kind people have a wonderful dream,
Margeret on the Gullotine,
Cause people like you,
make me so old inside,
When will you DIE?,

When will you DIE?

When will you DIE!!!!...

And kind people,
do not shelter this dream,
MAKE IT REAL!!,
make the dream real...."

Has Kim shown extreme glee at the sinking of a foreign ship?

she was terrible.
the list of things she fucked up goes on & on & on..

i think it says a lot that london, bristol, liverpool &
other major cities all had major riots during the early
1980s under thatcher's rule. that sort of thing doesnt
generally happen in britain, certainly not on that scale.

she caused a lot of public discontent. engineered the
economic situation which led to the early 90s recession. her
decisions whilst in power changed a lot of peoples lives
irreversibly for the worse & the legacy of her mistakes
still haunts the country now.

and even worse, she shows no remorse.

the description I got was that she tried to make england
more of a socialist place, and got rid of some public
welfare schemes in an attempt to force the lazy welfare
bludgers to work, survival of the fittest kind of thing,

only it was less fittest.. and more richest.

a lot of men in their mid-thirties to forties employed in
manual labour were made redundant under thatchers rule. they
never found work again. i went to school with some guys
whose fathers were in this situation. it did not make for a
comfortable lifestyle.
by the time these made had made themselves employable again,
they were seen as too old to reenter the workplace.
if they were lucky enough to have a pension.. they had to
make it last a looooong time.

More socialist?

Well, only in the way that fascism claims to be "pragmatic
socialism"...

One of her catchphrases was, "There is no such thing as
society" ie- You should be out for yourself.

Her ideology of survival of the fittest is flawed (and I'm a
conservative!), the idea of "game theory" is a more workable
method of conservative policy.

Acrid: Yep, I go to university in a mining community
destroyed by Thatcher, it's amazing how the effects were so
long lasting. I don't understand why they don't work down
the industrial estate (one/two train stations away depending
on which end of town you're from).

At the other end of the spectrum, an overly "inclusive"
society holds back the most intelligent, hard working and
useful. :)

yes. definitely.

but i never said anything about only operating in extremes,
did i?

like most things in life, it ends up being a grey area. with
no absolute solution.

either we are a society, or we arent.
unfortunately for some, its all about compromise. but
certainly not about supressing anyone : be they 'useful' or
(if youre talking in those terms) 'useless'.. though im sure
a lot of the people who bore the brunt of thatchers time in
office wouldnt be too happy at being deemed useless.

It was pretty weird as naps go. I had a dream where I was on
the run from the police becauce a mate grabbed a record out
of my record bag and threw it up in the air and it nearly
hit a truck. We found an entirely different record (some
unreleased D-styles battle record) and put that in my bag
instead then just as we were about to get into my car we
heard police sirens and drove off at speed.

Then when I woke up I could hear some Jazz my parents were
listening to on the radio downstairs playing over the top of
an illbient track of my own on loop and I was thinking
(before I properly woke up); there's no jazz in this piece!
How did I do the brass that well in Reason?!
