mcdonalds/daft punk

"thankyou for flying the mcdonald's poundsaver menu"

anyone else seen this ad? doesn't the music sound like an
approximation of daft punk's "around the world"? the visuals
even seem to be apeing michel gondry's video for the track.
its not the only one either. there seems to be increasing
numbers of commercials which loosely recreate music one can
only assume they were refused permission to use by the
artists.
im sure theres a shampoo ad which replicates a herbert
track. there used to be one which sounded like an mj cole
track.
and im some ad from the last 18 months sounded like a bad
cover of an aphex twin tune.
anyone else noticed these?

on a slightly different tangent, channel4 keeps using plaid
tunes from the not for fours lp as backing music during its
little intermission clips featuring various presenters
talking about nothing in particular.

I know exactly what you mean. Although I forget the ad, I
particularly hated the rip of James Brown's 'I Feel Good', a
song that is totally inimitable without James Brown. Those
bastards.

yeah happens a lot. also in tv programs. if you've seen
phoenix nights for example, most of the songs are actually
cover versions done as near to the original as possible.

also note music has been used without permission and then
been withdrawn. recently, muse - feeling good was used for a
product (i forget which), they complained and it was changed
to a (very similar) cover version in the same style.

i hear boc a hell of a lot on programs now. more recently
we've had aphex on the merc ad and lfo on the vw golf ad.

probably cheaper to copy a song and remind people of the
song you originally wanted, then actually pay to use the
original song...

funkmaster : naturally/obviously.

mappatazee : we have those too, this one seems fairly new,
but still uses the 'im loving it' thing at the end.

shouldn't it be illegal to copy an artist if they already
refused to let their music be used in the ad? Unless these
covers vary widely from the original, I would think it would
be some kind of plagiarism/copyright infringment...

away with it.

exactly! It`s like a bad cover and its illegal to create
that kind of track without a permission from an original
artist.

they do it alot in icelandic commercial. it bothers me
immensly.

they make their cover version of known song's from artists
like badly drawn boy and chemical brothers. they just
slightly change them so they don't have to pay any $$$ to
the artists/record company.

i think it's a big rip-off and should be illegal.

I always hear music in commercials here that reminds me so
much of certain other songs... it's crazy!

Man I had no idea how widespread this is.. I don't see it
much in the states except for like classic rock songs or
even older, so I don't really care much. But if I heard
plaid/afx/boc/etc being ripped off it would make me angry..
solution: make it illegal no matter what genre/artist. ;)
