nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

god jesus fuck shit. not mortal kombat you uncultured
swine....

it's an art film with no dialogue or storyline, just
beautiful images of different cultures (mostly eastern),
wildlife, architecture, landscape, religion, cityscape, etc.
just music and images....truly a beautiful piece of work

i cant believe that they did Baraka like they did in the

As long as i have kitana, i'll be okay.

Oh grow up. So no one never heard of this film as to why
anyone would watch it is beyond me. Let us take a look....

Plot Outline: A movie with no conventional plot: merely a
collection of expertly photographed scenes. Subject matter
has a highly environmental theme.

No conventional plot sounds kind of boring to me to be quite
honest. I have never heard nor have i seen this film but
based on that i dont think i would want to.

As a point of discussion, do you know anyone else that could
contribute to the conversation of this movie? I would like
to hear other opinions.

ive seen bits and pieces of this movie and its really
intrigued me. i plan on finding it someday and getting
insanely blazed and watching it. seems like a movie youd
have playing in a continuous loops at some crazy weird new
age hippy type party

offline HedFire on 2004-02-13 11:25 [#01071697]

actually the bit about having an environmental theme isn't
really accurate. i would say the theme is more culture- or
human-oriented. and although i haven't dissected the
thematic elements, it's quite possible that there isn't even
a cohesive theme to the movie.

i like this movie because i have a strong interest in
photography, and that is the area in which this film excels
in. growing up reading national geographic and watching
nature documentaries has given me an appreciation for
beautiful and rare footage. to the average person, seeing
footage of sparse rays of sunlight on a tibetan mountaintop
may be brutally boring, but to me it is inspiring because i
can sit back and dream of being the photographer who was
lucky enough to witness such an event. the movie is not for
everyone but i was hoping someone on this forum might have
seen it and could spark some discussion.

and no i do not know of anyone else who has seen it, which
is why i started this topic. maybe someone has a conflicting
opinion, or a similar one; any discussion is better than
none.

offline HedFire on 2004-02-13 11:28 [#01071707]

actually, there IS an environmental theme but i wouldn't say
it's a strong one. not as strong as, say, koyaanisqatsi.

So it is more or less a number of photographs or still shots
that reflect life in different cultures and/or areas? Or did
i miss the synopsis?

Fucking ace film. I'd get it if it wasn't so expensive.

offline HedFire on 2004-02-13 11:41 [#01071736]
Points: 196 Status: Lurker

it's all motion picture footage, but some of it is still
footage....if that makes sense? and if it's not still
footage then sometimes it's just slow-moving shots of a
certain structure or landscape or documentary footage of
different cultures. there are also a lot of time-lapsed
shots. it's kind of hard to describe....i guess the best way
to describe it is a mixture of breathtaking documentary
footage held together by a blend of worldly music. sometimes
the transitions between the footage draws parallels (like
there's a part where millions of baby chickens are being
moved down an assembly line and they go back and forth
between that and footage of crowds of people walking down
city streets).

i don't think i want to continue defending the thematic
message of this film because i'm not sure if there even is
one. my interpretation would be that this film celebrates
life and diversity but also brings to light certain negative
aspects of society. again, the main focus of this film for
me was the amazing photography (i guess it might be called
cinematography since it's a film). hope all this makes
sens..i'm starting to confuse myself..

i think Baraka is an amazing movie.

i love the little sequence of the hundreds of chinese women
rolling cigarrettes in a factory followed by the shot of the
wealthy chinese business man casually smoking a cigarrette
in his expensive suit.

i also like the sequence of the factory farmed chickens
shown in parallel to the time lapse photography of hoards of
humans filing on and off of trains and through the city.

oh and the bit with the chanting monks is pretty mind
boggling. kinda showing a sort of collective conciousness
of the enlightened.

Yeah great movie. excellent photography.

the only part i don't really like is the oil well burning
sequence and thats mostly because i can't stand the sound of
Bag Pipes.

i think you are on there.
i always interpreted Baraka as a film about humans place in
nature and their relationship to their surroundings..
positive and negative. i really appreciate how even the
negative aspects of human existence are photographed with
such grandure such as to make it beautiful. Kinda like a
statement that our existence is so detailed, and full of
unique facets, that all aspects of it are amazing and
beautiful.

or something like that

very well put. i was struggling to describe the 'negative'
aspects of the film because, as you said, even though they
are filming negative events, they are filmed in a glorified
way. i wasn't quite sure how to take that but i think your
interpretation is excellent. i think the scene of the
funeral pyre is a perfect example of that.

for hd if there ever was any.

i suppose i will be making use of my friend's 720 dpi
projector and $700 subwoofer soon enough. last movie night
we had with his system was there will be blood (not counting
watching the entire olympic opening ceremonies) in hd.
fucking amazing sound in that movie, it has to be watched on
a system with impressive subbass.

i would strongly recommend you to get the dvd since it is
shot in 70mm widescreen format, which i doubt is converted
correctly. normally i'm not such a purist but i think a LOT
would be lost in a simple avi rip. As others have said, the
sound is fantastic as well and preferably played in 5.1 over
good speakers.

agreed, this is a film where downloading a full dvd rip

i've been watching baraka again recently and i noticed the
aspects described in your posts, i agree with your
description and i'd like to add that there is also some
sarcasm in those conflicting sequences, so the combination
of those with the music succeeded to take people in
different places (good or bad) at the emotional level as
well.
