For the most part, I agree. But same goes with nearly every holiday nowadays. Atleast this holiday is rooted in something relatively universal. I mean, it doesn't have to do with Jesus' rebirth through painted eggs squated out by a bunny or dragging a tree into your livingroom. You don't have to be Jewish or Christian or Mormon to celebrate Valentine's Day.
But I definitely see your point. For those of us who have a significant someone, this holiday stresses the idea of CARING and LOVE being expressed through gifts and heartshaped forgetmenots. It reminds me of those Jiffy Peanut Butter commercials, "Good Mom's Get Jiffy!" Good boyfriends go to Sanrio Surprises and buy the Chococat Coin Purse and the Asian Pear Body Spray from Avon.
Besides the childish joy of an old man breaking into my house to give me presents, Halloween is the funnest holiday ever. I mean, you fucking get candy. For Free!

True. Unlike The Festival of Lights and Christmas, where the exchanging of gifts is entirely platonic, on Valentine's Day lovin' is part of the bargain. Atleast a Privates Party is thrown in the formula.
And hey, atleast Andre 3000's Happy Valentine's Day is a nice track.

It's only bad if you choose to spend shit loads. Gem and I get each other a card to recognise the day and that's about it.
We normally say that we won't plan anything that day so we can just spend time together. I'm cooking a nice peppered steak meal on saturday for us.
People say "You should show you partner love everyday of that year!", but most people don't and "everyday of the year" includes Feb 14th,
It's a good excuse without having to spend shitloads of money, unlike Christmas.

Spend it with a load of mates or something. The day is about declaring you love for someone who doesn't know it yet or isn't sure of it. It's not really about couples already together.
don't worry about it mate.

My real problem with valentines day is this;
You buy a card etc. you're basically buying into what is, in terms of commercialism, worse than Christmas (I know Christmas is celebrated in a bigger way, but at least it has some roots in a religious celebration).
If, however, you don't do all that, even if you explain to your gf your reasons behind not celebrating it, you look like a tightwad.

i just found out my friend is into me again (he was a couple of years ago too, but i picked my x over him), and i'm extremely physically attracted to him, but mentally i'm not at all (as a boyfriend, i mean). so it sucks.

I think that people that bitch and moan about valentines day are either single and bitter or with someone and have lost the flame. i have been with my fiance for close to six years, and i look forward to valentines day. all jokes aside about the whole sex being a BONUS, we really get to reflect on that day at our realationship. reminisce a little bit. if done right, its very healthy i think. its the one day a year where no matter what the hell is going on, its just OUR day.

In my country, there was no valentines day before early 90s. Then started a great boom and people were like crazy, celebrateing these for us new holidays, they were "in" and who didn't know about it was "out". Quite superficial and today it seems to me more and more superficial with so much commercials etc.

intruder: thats pretty crappy man, you actually have a set day to remind you and your partner of your love? my god.... its YOUR day? fuck off seriously, what a cheesy relationship, ive been in love for a long time.. a couple times, and ive done some cheesy things which is OK, but never have I said that the 14th is a day to remind us of our love, I had every day with them for that and thats why I didnt need valentines day, it was so fuckin lame, most of my girlfriends thought so too, I was getting the flowers here and there, little gifts when I was out without them to remind them that I was thinking of them... all sorts of things, but fuck... never ever did I succumb to the manufactured holiday, and what its supposed to mean.

That was no joke, my friend. Valentine's Day is about celebrating your love for someone, yes? There is no better way to celebrate love than to make it.
Don't hate on Valentine's Day, hate on Hallmark and marketing and advertisement. Hate on See's Candy and Target. Leave Cupid out of this, he didn't mean any harm.

ok i agree with intruder and reflex and wimp all at once: yeah valentine's day is just as anyother day, so why should you wait or only celebrate your love on that one day? but at the same time, it is nice to have a day that you can forget about everything else and celebrate your love for your mate!
anyway, i don't want to get all philosophical and crap about holidays, because most are silly. except for birthdays.
my fiancee' and i are giving each other money to put towards our apartment and a vacation. plus i'm doing little things for her (it's the effort, you know?), just as i do any other random day of the year. celebrate (or don't) as you wish, it's up to you!

It is the 75th anniversary of a special day and we are going to celebrate it by a completely faithful re-enactment of the events...although the location will probably be different.
Then I will go home and let the bitch decide the position for once, provided she has cooked me food. Otherwise I am going around and fucking her mum.
