Cool Edit Latency help, please!

I've only recorded a tiny bit (2 guitar tracks) so far in
Cool Edit pro with my Ozone, but I noticed lots of latency
towards the middle through the end of the recording. Can
anyone tell me which settings to change (and what to change
them to) so that there wont be any latency? I need as close
to zero latency as possible, as I do not understand how I
can record properly if nothing happens when it is supposed
to. Thanks in advance! :)

Also, is there any way to check in Windows whether the USB
ports are running at 1.0 or 2.0 speed? My motherboard is
supposed to be 2.0, but it seems that this could also be the
culprit...

I just checked the device manager to get info about my USB..
and for each of them there is a "Bandwidth Used"
percentage... is it possible that since I have 4 USB devices
plugged in now, they are sharing the total bandwidth 4 ways?
If that's the case, then I'll unplug everything that isn't
absolutely necessary when recording..

this is a total guess, but i would have thought that having
4 USB devices would in fact share the bandwidth over the
four devices.....i would suggest unplugging stuff you don't
need, restarting Windows, and then defragging just to make
sure.

to be honest when doing anything with music under Windows i
wouldn't even have something running in the background in
the system tray - Windows doesn't manage memory very
well...

it could be a memory problem, how much RAM do you have, and
what percentage of system resources do you have available
when running Cool Edit?

yeah that happens to me sometimes too. what i do is find
that track that is lagging and delete tiny bit after tiny
bit of silence from the beginning of the waveform, nudging
the track back that amount each time until the both parts
play exactly simultaneously like it was intended.
or sometimes i just leave it that way and it makes it weird
sounding.

Latency shouldn't be a problem when you are recording audio.
Normally if their is a bandwidth problem crackle and pops
and general distortion occurs.

What exactly do you mean when you are using the word
latency?

I've got 512mb dual channel DDR ram.. I'll try closing as
many things as I can and unplugging the unneeded USB
devices.

Towards the end of the track, the timing is just noticeably
way off between the syncing of the two tracks... Moreso than
I know is possible for me to have fucked up (I stay on time
pretty well).

offline ecnadniarb on 2004-02-12 11:36 [#01070075]

Are there gaps in the audio? (we are still talking about
audio recording through the ozone aren't we?) I just can't
understand what you mean...you are saying that is gradually
goes out of sync until it is noticable at the end, or it is
out of sync throughout the whole track?

512 DDR should be fine for recording.....what version of
Windows are you running?

if it's 2k / XP they are a bit more memory hungry, but it
shouldn't be your memory.

just out of curiosity, is your Cool Edit a
copy/cracked/cerealed version?
i only ask because i've noticed a LOT of applications
recently are hiding malicious code inside them and
activating it once an illegal cereal or crack is installed

offline Q4Z2X on 2004-02-12 11:38 [#01070079]

i don't see why that would be happening besides all the usb
shit being used.

it's quite hillarious that i don't get much latency with my
computer.. it's like 500 mhz, 128 mb ram etc..

offline Zephyr Twin from ΔΔΔ on 2004-02-12 11:42 [#01070092]

ecnad: Like I said before, it gets out of sync towards the
end of the track, but until the middle the syncing is fine..
I recorded some more last night and noticed that it was
happening much less, but at times it would still be a little
bit off.

oscilik: yeah, it's unfortunately a cracked version. That's
pretty sneaky (though understandable) of the software
companies to be doing that.

"That's pretty sneaky (though understandable) of the

If in fact that is the case here...

But if the audio isn't gapping then how is it going out of
sync? USB doesn't timestretch an audio stream when
bandwidth is limited, there would be noticable distortion.

yeah i know :(

i had a copy of soundforge 5 (i think it was 5) and it'd
install fine, and then about 2 weeks later it'd just refuse
to exectue.....well, tell a lie, it'd execute, bring up the
window and in about 5 milliseconds it'd bomb out. no reason
why, no error box or anything.

and i've come accross a couple of Mac OS X apps that do the
same thing, except a bit more malicious.........i had one
that'd fill up my memory and then leak it all and eat up my
CPU cycles :(

needless to say, i paid for the program
lol

yeah you're right.....it's digital.........if there was a
problem on the actual USB side of it, there would be either
distortion or just plain old massive gaps in the audio....it
wouldn't 'timestretch'

haha, same here...

lee: I admit I don't fully understand how this all works. I
have been practicing music for 5 years but I'm new to the
aspects of recording.. so I'm afraid I don't have an answer
for you about the gaps and whatnot.

they should just make it so a dialogue box comes up saying
"we know you obtained this software illegally, you may
continue to use it, but from now on the performance of it
will be 300% shittier. if you were to actually purchase this
program it would work extremely better"
that way, people wouldn't just think that the program sucks
ass and never actually buy it.

Ok, I'm recording with my synth now and there are some
cracks in the recording... What should I change the
Play/Record Buffer, Preview Buffer, and Wave cache to, if
anything?

The P/R Buffer is currently at 2 seconds, using 10 buffers.

The Preview buffer is at minimum size 250ns

The wave cache is set to 8192Kb, and there is an option to
Use System's Cache.

Thanks guys.

also, are these clicks and pops in the actual recording, or
just a result of being played back via a USB soundcard?
like, if I switch back to my soundblaster will they still be
there?

another thing.. when using the metronome, how do you set it
so that it only plays during recording and not in playback?
Also, I think it's being recorded into the track.. is there
someway to fix this or am I just doomed to not be able to
use the metronome?

latency.

You shoudn't have to have anywhere near a 2 second buffer.
You must be doing something wrong. Are you sure you have
read the manual properly and everything?

the manual for what, cool edit pro? cuz it's hacked so I
don't really have a manual, and in the help file it doesnt
specify what value to set it at... so should I set like a 1
second buffer?

You've totally lost me with what you are trying to do.
Latency should only really be an issue with the MIDI
elements of the keyboard. If you are just using the
keyboard to record sound into the computer you should be
having these problems.

I haven't used cool edit pro so I can't speak specifically
on that but I would lean more towards it is something to do
with a setting on the keyboard or keyboard drivers rather
than the software packages.

OK try setting the buffer as high as you can and disable and
power management software you have running on your PC and
give recording another try.

Ok, well I just listened to something I recorded through my
soundblaster and speakers as opposed to through my ozone and
headphones, and there are like 500 MILLION fucking pops and
crackles... whereas before there were like 3... seriously
the quality is the shittiest fucking sound I have ever
heard. WHAT THE FUCK.

I just tried recording with soundforge 7, and in the ozone
there were the usual pops but playing it back through my
soundblaster there were only a few... so I guess that's
progress?

ok well soundforge seems to suck completely.. you can't even
record on multiple tracks with this program.
