a train travels 150 km in the same time that a plane covers 400 km. If the speed of the plane is 20 km per hr less than 3 times the speed of the train, find both speeds.
can someone tell me how to do this

Blah, it's just an equation with two unknown factors, it shouldn't be that hard.

The train is travelling at 60km/h and the plane is travelling at 160km/h.

first you calculate that train makes 0.375 distance of the plane in the same time...and then, there's a formula i don't know so it usually takes me couple of minutes to try few different numbers :)

You are given the formula:
p = 3t - 20
where p is the planes speed and t is the trains speed.
If you try it with the plane travelling at 400km/h you get
400 = (150 * 3) - ? 400 = 450 - ? -50 = -? ? = 50
We know that
p = 3t - 20 is equivelent to 400 = (150 * 3) - 50.
Using the known factors of 50 and 20 we can work out the ratio 0.4 you just multiply the distance by this ratio to find the speed.
400 * 0.4 = 160 150 * 0.4 = 60
And there you have it.

sorry. i wanted to thank you for showing me how you got it, but there has to be a shorter way to do this. all the linear equations i've done so far in the book are formulated in a way where i dont need to create ratio's. regardless if this is the only way to do it or not i'll keep working on it YOU SMART!
