Just finished listening to a promo copy of this, here's my review:
Global Goon's latest offering is playful and fun, but with enough complexity to keep detail-lovers interested. A refreshing change in a climate of "more abstract than thou" noise and DSP trickery that often hides an abscence of real melody. The comparatively short track times (none over four minutes) help keep your interest and prevent the tracks ideas from getting overdone. You probably won't find yourself skipping past a track on this album, most of the tracks on their own leave you wanting more, but only the full, 11 course meal of 'glue really fills your appetite.
Whilst the album definately has a cohesive sound to it, there are a lot of different styles and sounds here, from Glory B's acidy squelches, it goes straight into a sort of 2 step/garage feel in Frienchip Never Dies, before almost to SOSW territory (albeit with live bass) with "My Naem Is 'Johnny Hawk'".
Throughout the album, there is excellent use of his bass guitar (the boy can play!). My only criticism of it would be that bass needs a little more presence in the mix, but hopefully that'll be sorted out in the final mixed album. The bass on both, "Who Gonched Ya?" and "Keep yer face on" is particularly good. There's a 70s funk quality to that doesn't sound "put on", which is rare to hear in recent work such as this.
The penultimate track, "Pause" sounds as if it could come from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop circa 1967. Skittering sci-fi ambience, that eases the listener out of the album for a bit, before it comes back to the style of the rest of the tracks for the album's close "Family Glue".
The album won't be to everyones taste- if you only like the more clinical, glitchier side of IDM, this probably isn't for you. You're in for a treat, however, if you like it a bit funkier, sort of "Luke Vibert goes back to the 70s". People in the latter category will lap this up.
You'd better hurry up with your orders though; at the time of press

You'd better hurry up with your orders though; at the time of press there were a mere 40 left (it's going down every time I check). Order yours at: http://www.globalgoon.com/
Never mind Ultravisitor, this is what you ought to be getting excited about.
Overall: 8.9/10

*ceri gets an umnastered, CD-r review promo copy and will be buying a "real" copy of this.
I didn't post a favourable view because I got a copy, it really is a good release. Wait till the albums is finished and DL the sample MP3s he'll put up if you want to decide for yourself. I'm not "in his pocket" by any means, I thought Vatican Nitez was fairly weak and I'm not ashamed to say so. This is a lot better in my opinion, that's all.
I won't argue there is some benefit to him in me posting the review, after the numerous delays associated with this release, it does confirm that it really is very nearly ready for release. Also, it gives it a small degree of publicity. Still, do you level the same criticism at pitchfork or music magazines?

I think my favourite single track by him is still "Long Whiney" (features on Rephlex's Braindance Coeincedence), that's worth checking out too. This album isn't too disimilar to the style of Mithanthrix (that remix competition track) so if you liked those, this shouldn't dissapoint you.

(This is entirely speculation) I think as he put this release out himself, he wanted to make sure enough people were serious about buying it, before he commited several grand to getting it all pressed up etc. and to then be unable to sell them.
I don't reckon it's such a problem now, he has sold most copies, so if the MP3 extracts (which'll be up soon) convince a few dozen more people to buy it, he'll of sold all copies of it.
Just out of interest, don't you ever buy stuff without hearing it first? I'm reluctant to do so usually, but I do occassionally. The Manhunt remix CD would be a prime example.

My Review: Over the last year or so Johnny Hawk has been letting us all in on the making of Family Glue, giving us unparalleled insight into his creative process. With that in mind I knew this was going to be special. This album held an emotional attachment before it even landed on my doormat. I’m not even gonna mention what I think the title means, but I expect it’s to mean whatever you want to.
At first listen it’s a change in trajectory towards the middle ground of a more commercial sound [I don’t mean like moby ;)], but the more I listened the goon trademarks kept showing through. The combination of live bass really works, giving it a really warm feel. What really struck me was that the songs were invoking images of summer days on the beach and just giving a happy warm glow inside.
It’s very hard to choose highlights on the cd because the songs all have their own unique qualities. For example there are some sounds used that can almost be described as cheesy but they seem to add to the character of the track.
I can foresee me playing this cd for a long time to come so I’m gonna give this 10/10. This family of is stuck together forever. [ivo 11.02.04]

My Review!
From the second I didn't receive a promo copy of Global Goons new album I knew it was going to be something special. I didn't ask for one, nor did I register my interest in the album, although I am considering purchasing it at some point.
Not being bothered to spend any time at We Are The Elitest Twats I haven't had any insight into the creative process and on my first non listen I realised that it being one of the most critical reviewers here I should really have had a copy to review as, chances are, the feeling of "being special" wouldn't have tainted my view.
Global Goon has had both highlights and lowlights in both his hair and his career, and I think this album, given the time spent on it, should be a worthwhile purchase to support independent distribution if nothing else.
Writing reviews after a day or so is rediculous though...a review on a purchasable release should only be written after 2 weeks and plenty of listening.
So far though, the only real letdown is the fact that Johnny has rejected his scouse heritage as it won't be possible to steal the release on CD from a major store.
In conclusion to this mixed review I recommend you listen before you buy, and don't listen to anyone elses view and make your own mind up. But do buy it if you like, because I am fucking sick of seeing J-HOK begging for money at Liverpool Central Station holding a board that says "Will bleep for food".
God bless you all. [shitbag 11.02.04]

he posted 5 tracks on WATMM 'expert knob twiddlers' forum a few months ago that were likely to be on Family Glue.
These two are the best out of those, in my opinion:
Family Glue Track 1
Family Glue Track 2
I'm pretty sure they are on the album. I really hope so because these tracks are very good.
Ceri J, can you can confirm that these tracks are on the album?

I've heard some interesting new goon tracks (whats that one? downtown zippidy boo..) but mostly through my friend who actually gets stuff by him. It's better in a way cuz he can play me the best tracks rather then have to depend upon myself to explore yet another artist.

Yeah but sometimes I want technical, then random noise or cheesy stuff depending. I don't care how any music is made as long as it inspires me. If I didn't purchase any albums that didn't meet a certain grade in it's production I'd have a lot less CDs and have lost out on a lot of stuff I adore.
Square window is beautiful, I'd walk over many artists for that. But I can't expect such standards from everyone.
