So I mean there are so many different ways to look at it.
Lets start with "IDM", first off this is what a lot of
people consider the cream of the crop for electronic music,
there is ambient, drill, basic, and other versions of IDM
that people love to listen to. And same goes with other
forms of electronic, like Jungle, Dance, Hard... blah blah
blah.. etc.

The same goes for a lot of other kinds of music as well -
the blues, rock.....

Now why is it that a lot of people here cant see beyond
electronic music? Im not asking anyone to like what they
dont like, but open your eyes a little bit.

Dont think that just because someone listens to metal that
its MTV friendly, trendy or something for young kids. I
thought we were all old enough to make atleast somewhat
decent choices. I listen to all sorts of metal, and while
most of it im sure no one here will like (well there are a
good many members I have talked to about it on occasion who
really like death and grind what not) it, I know for a fact
that there is a massive world of all sorts of Metal out
there, more so than IDM for that matter. And no that doesnt
make it better, im just saying.

All im saying if dont judge based on what little information
you have, saying that it fits in with Limp Bizkit!? WTF?
Thats like saying Aphex Twin is like Happy Hardcore. Its
just not even in the same ballpark, whole different game.

So open your eyes a bit more and dont judge based on
something you know nothing about.

Maybe youd even come to like different styles of music, not
just metal, but other things. I know ive enjoyed a wide
range of music because of this.

Where did this come from? Did you base it on your own
fantasy that somehow most people other than yourself are
closed minded? I don't really see many people here
criticising other music types, it's just that conversation
tends to be electronic music based...which is fair enough
given it is an electronic music site :P

NO, I it comes from a few years of hanging out here,
observing when other members make topics about different
styles of music, even myself, Ive made lots of topics over
the years about other types of tunes and a good amount of
the time people, some people anyway generalize so much it
hurts .. it hurts me so!! boohoo. I know but whatever.

I know its a electronic board man! But that doesnt mean
people have to be only electronic minded 110% of the time
does it? And if so, it doesnt mean that people have to be
such dicks about it, as if its a conformist club or
something.

beyond [all different types of] electronic music i see
reggae, jazz, some ethnic.........

i don't like metal because........don't know why........it's
just not that sounds i like.......

though one of my friends [for example] likes
type-o-negative very much and at the same time think that
plaid and autechre are the best groups.....

tolstoyed: I dunno, Im just being a dick about it, but
atleast I know the difference between them and lets say....
Nickleback or some super radio band. And I dont generalize
them.

Well, .. me im WAY more into Metal and all its various
forms, and a little into electronic, although I love many
IDM artists and ambient and stuff...

See Type-O-Negative is a very.... well I dunno how to put
it, radio friendly group? Very soft black metal... well I
wouldnt even say Black Metal.. but they are a pretty decent
band, I dont own anything by them, and probably never will,
but they are pretty OK.

This comes from the thread about his t-shirt.

I just don't think electronic musicians need to use names
like 'dying fetus' and 'grotesque impalement' to sell
records. I guess this is bias but it makes me not even
interested in the genre, as if it is trying to explain its
emotions (one emotion, it seems) with words rather than
convey them in the music.

I think the phrase you're searching for is "power ballads"

btw, i think this mb is extremly open minded towards
different music...actually i was really surprised when i
joined couple of years ago to see this variety of styles
being discussed here. take techno (rave) scene for
instance, they don't ever! mention anything that doesn't fit
into their genre.

Xanatos:.. hahah!! see. you dont know what your talking
about, because it has NOTHING to do with selling records.
There are a million groups I could name off the top of my
head that have far worse band/song titles.. right now. And
it has nothing to do with selling anything.

There are lots of death groups that have normal, and not
"scary" lyrics, names or song titles. And they do just as
well.

It really isnt like you think it is. And names like that ..
well I enjoy them. I think its cool. Atleast some people in
the music world dont act like pussies all the time.

Its just strange that people would think that its used to
sell things???? WTF?

those names are just part of their scene imo. electronica
artists use silly names as well, don't you think? how is
aphex twin or squarepusher any different to dying fetus?
it's all down to music for me...

_user: yeah I know.. I know.. i was just saying.. nothing
wrong there.

Xanatos again... if it were to try and sell records then it
would have to appeal to people that would be shocked or
disgusted by this all, and obviously you dont know the
people behind all this great music. But thats ok.

i mean i don't like that type of music so i don't know
names

[though i think i can listen to it if there will not be any
alternative]

tolstoyed: awsome point dude, i was going to say something
along those lines too....

AE and Aphex Twin and sooooo many others use strange names
that dont make any sense, its all the same thing, its just
part of the music.. its what comes along with it. andyeah
there are exceptions... but not many obviously. If you cant
look past electronic.....

exactly!

I agree, I take back what I said about the purpose being
selling records. I also admit I don't know much about the
genre, but I can tell you what makes me (and probably other
people) closed minded to it.

It just feels like more shock than substance, especially in
the words. If I wanted to convey the emotion of ripping
flesh from a babies face or whatever it is that is the goal
I wouldn't name my album 'baby mutilation' and my songs
named 'eating the baby's flesh', 'fucking its corpse' etc.
which seem to be the labels of the t-shirts of the
metalheads I see. I guess part of my snobbery is that it
seems like it is a whole genre devoted to one message while
other forms of music can contain many more ideas.

I admit I am closed minded -- not that I wouldn't give it a
listen, I would -- just that these are the kinds of things I
think when I see that t-shirt, although I guess that comment
belongs in the other thread.

tallyho: that may be true, but not all the time.... there
are times when it seems as if some people here are quick to
generalize... often. If it were open all the time I wouldnt
get flak for listening to Death Metal, or there wouldnt be
such stupid comments made about it.

Xanatos: see.. thats better! .... It isnt about sellin'
records.. so you know. But... thats just what comes with it,
and if people dont like it, then thats all good! Really it
is.. its like how ambient people usually have titles about
stuff like Fjords, clouds, stars.. and warm stuff, and blah
blah blah, etc. They also have all sorts of other titles
too, just like Death Metal doesnt all have to be about DEAD
STUFF AND FUCKING DEAD STUFF... trust me, take it from one
who knows.

The whole genre, is dedicated to so many different messages,
most of them in the end are just about doing what you want,
being open minded and other stuff... there is lots of stuff
about dead shit, and jesus and other religious stuff, but
its just like how some electro stuff is really just about
having weird names and titles and strange pics and movies
and stuff, same difference.

btw, venetians snares is presenting that same image as well,
i think, not as extreme i guess as he doesn't use much
lyrics, but the track titles, the covers...

anyway, i know what you mean, cuz i used to feel the
same...but now i can easilly accept the whole thing is just
part of their image...

offline REFLEX from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) on 2004-02-06 17:16 [#01062740]

BUT... its not part of all death metals image.. just some..
or probably most from what youve seen. I dunno...... i like
that sort of stuff too though.. i like all that crazy shit
..... and I like all this crazy electro shit too.. so... I
dunno where this goes..

Tolstoyed: point taken. although vsnares doesn't always go
from that angle.
Mostly with making orange things.

I think people have a wide appreciation for music here... my
thing is that it sometimes seems some people are afraid to
like popular music... which you're kind of alluding to
REFLEX, buy saying certain bands are too "radio-friendly"
and whatnot... so what? Look at the music, is it good? If
so, listen to it... if you just downright hate it, then
fine... but it can be popular and still good...
