I'm growing more and more obsessed with this guy. But there
are so many records to choose from. I wonder if anyone can
recommend some essentials. So far the records I have are
mostly from the sixties - the ones he released n Columbia. I
know that many consider these records less important than
the ones he released on Riverside in the fifties. Anyway, I
think they all are great records. The ones I have are:

1. Monk's Moods - This looks like a semi-official budget
compilation - Compiles stuff he recorded from 1944-48 -
Released on Naxos

2. Ken Burns jazz - Compilation of stuff from the forties to
the late sixties. Columbia Records

3. Brilliant Corners - Absolutely fantastic album from his
Riverside years in the fifties!

4. Criss-cross - Columbia 1963 - Superb and very up-beat
album!

5. Straight, No Chaser - Columbia 1967

6. Underground - Columbia 1968

I can recommend all these albums, and I'm hungry for more
but there are so many of them! What should I get next?

What kind of music is it? Do you know about some killer
soundclips on the net?

morsto-x: It's jazz and it's wicked! Thelonius was - in my
view - the aphex twin of jazz in the forties and fifties. He
plays the piano soooo cool and his compositions are very
distinctive and original both when it comes to rythm and
melody. I don't know of any clips tho... but you'll probably
find some on the recordshops on the net.

Drunken Mastah: Thanks for that link, they did have some
Monk records on special offer. The Smak wallet was gone the
last time I checked. Did you pick it up anyway?

any of the artists were good enough to order.

so you DID mean just Thelonious Monk? why the "sphere?"

don't confuse me now! haha!

i've got all the.. not ALL the CD's, 'cause some of them are
compilations, but all the "normal" records on that page, and
probably some more.

No it didn't but I did a search and found it... do you have
any Ornette Coleman records as well? I have "The art of the
improvisers" and that is awesome. I'm definitely getting
more of his shit too!

no, I don't think I have ornette, but my father may have
some (he has lots of cool jazz!)

(et lite tips: sitter nå og hører på urørt sin
jazz-nettradio, og det er UTROLIG mye kule greier der!
(velg jazz til venstre!))

Ahmad Jamal is also good! saw him live at Ole Blues or
Nattjazzen. Not much of a live-show, but the music was
pretty good! (his bass-player had the BIGGEST FUCKING HAND
EVER!)

I love Ahmad Jamal too! I was there at Ole Blues. Big-hand
had a big grin as well! Something like your avatar. I think
Jamal was pretty funny, walking around like he was demented
or something :)

hehe.. and making small "ye" "øh" and "hy"-sounds!

funny guy, he was!

(did you notice all the people leaving before the concert
was finished? there is ALWAYS an extra song! ALWAYS!
uncultivated mongrels, they were, the people who left before
the extra (haha! sorry. if you left before the extra, you
are an uncultivated mongrel!))

Yeah, I stayed for the encore. There were too many posh
people at the concert... ladida!

yeah.

and after the concert, we went to a melodi
grand-prix-party-ish-thingie (not a real party, i we were
lots of people watching grand-prix at my brothers
apartement). the musical quality of MGP compared to Ahmad
made for hours of fun, mocking the artists!!!

monk's dream is a good one.

re: ornette: you could start with one of his early albums
like tomorrow is the question! or the shape of jazz to come,
if you're new to free jazz.
