Drum Machines

Khurt from Milwaukee on 2001-12-13 04:54 [#00060432]

Hello. I am just curious about how a drum machine works. Do
you create different drum beats by pressing buttons? Is it
complicated? I am interested and need some info if possible.
Thanks.

You see inside a drum machine there are tinny little
drummers your tracks depend on how well you treat your
little drummer.......I take mine out for breakfast on sunday
after we see a movie together.......I sometimes take him to
DisneyLand whe he makes me a very good track the only
problem is he can't get on any of the rides !!!!!!!! THE
BARON HAS SPOKEN!!!!

-realtime recording:
play the beats live

-steptime recording:
program the beats in patterns by pushing the knob where you
want to play
a sound.
For example 1000100010001000
The one is a bassdrum, and every digit is a 16th note.

try Rebirth V2 (software)

Drum Machines like the TR 808 and TR 909 (By ROland) allow
you to program in when to play a beat in each 16th of a bar.
You do this for each instrument separatley and then save
this "bar" as a pattern. You can save loads of different
patterns so when you're playing live, you just change
patterns and twiddle the knobs rather than actually hitting
any beats. I find this very useful as I have no sense of
rhythm, but decent pitch recognition.

on a drum machine, you usually have a bunch of buttons. each
button is a different drum, percussion, noise sound. for
drum machines with more sounds than buttons, you can change
the sound for a button. anyway, you can push the buttons as
you realtime record and get recorded what you played as you
play it, or you can do step recording and insert your sounds
at specific intervals and places in a pattern.

What programs, 1010? How do you get them?

Re-birth is good, it incorporates drum machines as well as 2
synths.

There should be a freeware program called "leaf drums/z?" -
A friend of mine got it and raves about it.

It has obvious limitations but it aint bad for beat
production to start off with. It has a midi grid type thing
(in 16th note resolution - i think) ... with a bunch of drum
"samples", each different line corresonds to a different
line. so it'd be similar to the 1000100010001000 as
explained above (only each number fits in a different
square - on the same row for the same drum): hope this is
making sense.

eg:
BD 1000100010001000
SD 0000100000001000
OH 0010001000100010

or so - ?

The good thing about leaf drum is that you can substitute
your own samples in other rows .. so in effect it is like a
little sampler thing ..

That combined with like Protools Free (which altho free
chews up a lot of Ram) - to like compile different tracks
and do effects and stuff?
