When I load Kontakt and try to edit a patch I can't get to
the edit part of the GUI. The edit button depresses but it
doesn't display any controls.

I'm using windows 2000.... tried it on an XP machine at work
and it worked. I don't want to go through the hassle of
upgrading... uck. Please someone tell me I just have to
delete a registry key or sumpin!

I prefer the weasel phrase "extended demo period". :-)

I'm looking to get away from FL Studio and into something
else... I'll probably be dropping a grand or two on software
this year. 8-O

I'm fixin to get at least Cubase SX and Kontakt and either
Reaktor or Absynth. I'm leaning towards Reaktor.

I'm going to steer clear of Max/MSP for the time being...
just don't have the time!

Have you ever tried Halion?

I had a look at the Halion interface and it wasn't as clean
and logical as Kontakt. I get the impression it's more
suited for using preset sample sets and soundfonts and like
that, whereas Kontakt seems to lend itself more to screwing
around with your own stuff.
