I want to play the original Doom... or Doom 2, or Ultimate
Doom. It has come to my attention that I've played the
original a couple of times. I'm very familiar with the game
though, I've played ports of it for SNES, GBA, 32X, PS, N64,
the works. But never the real deal for more than an hour.
The thing must be floating around somewhere for free now,
where can I get it and how can I play it? Would it even run
on Windows XP? They must have hacked and mangled it, I know
there's somewhere I can do it. I want to play the original,
or as close to it as possible. Mods and hacks are welcome.

Gear! How big is the file? I recall it fit on a 1.44 MB
floppy... if it's smaller than 2MB, can you send it to
revolverjgw@hotmail.com?

Doom, Doom2, TNT, Plutonia all run from the same program
'The Ultimate Doom'. If it just the Original Doom 1 that you
want then it will probably fit on a couple of floppy's,
however i highly recommend that you have the whole package,
61MB (unzipped). I can send on a cd or let you download it
from my pc if you know how.

a time? man, fuck ports! play it for PC you slacker!

I find it hard to play doom for less than 2 hours, it is
just one of those games that you really get into. I cant
wait for doom3 to come out!

61MB... that probably won't fit in my hotmail! Do you have
Soulseek or anything?

Zephyr Twin- D'uh! :-p

I remember reading about the PC version of Doom in a copy of
Hyper (game mag) March 93 i think, it got about 94%!! It was
a big thing!

You needed 4MB of RAM on your PC aswell.. I only had 2MB :/

I'm actually downloading a .zip file, 40MB, from someone
with Soulseek, says ''all 4 Doom games''. But it's a slow
download and who knows what's ACTUALLY inside it...

seriously though, I find it appalling that you spent so much
time and money on ports when the PC version is so readily
available and so obviously superior.

OK, I can install soulseek and share it if the current file
turns out to be bogus. I have ADSL so it wont be a problem.
The zip i have is 27 MB btw

i remember when kinder surprise used to have really cool
toys inside that had loads of parts and you had to make them
tourself, now though it is usually some plastice piece of
shite with a head and a body and an instruction book telling
you that the head plugs into the body. no fun

I got my first computer in 2000, and by then it was just too
passe. I was a late blooming computer geek, have mercy on
me!

Jazembo- OK, this download will be done later tonight, I'll
just see if it's legit (I'd message the guy and ask but I'm
too shy) and and if it's not, then we'll figure something
out. You're my Hero of the Day anyway.

well, in that case it is completely understandable.. but for
me doom was probably the first great game I ever played, I
remember back in the 4th grade I had to convince my dad to
spend 100 dollars(!) on a 4meg stick of ram so that my
computer could run doom in DOS! Boy oh boy, how times
have changed.

computer! And It was a huge difference! I was DOOMing!

memories indeed!

I beat the SNES version, but it was choppy, pixelly, ugly...
still very enjoyable. The N64 version was a standalone game,
not a remake or port... it was actually pretty awesome, but
really obscure and underrated. But yeah... I know I need to
play the old man himself, so I'm trying.

yeah, haha I turbocharged my 486 to 8mb of ram... God all
this talk of doom has made me remember all the hours spent
playing it, I kind of feel the need to play it now!

The best thing about doom was that it was the first game
with multiplayer options. Ahhh it was so fucking great I'
gonna start crying now...

I can imagine myself enjoying going through doom2
cooperative mode with a couple of mates even during these
days of yore with the crappy geforce cards and sluggish
frame rates.

also...

It probably was wolfenstein. Forget what I posted about
sluggish frame rates. Doom was quite a beast back in the
days. It probably needed a monster pc and a 386 with 2 mb
ram wouldn't cut it. It would run decently in a 486 with 8mb
and above.

Yep Wolfenstein was awesome too!

Doom needed 4Mb RAM to run!
Wolf3d needed little.

Ultimate Doom and Final Doom, all fully functional. I got
pretty far into the first one, and I'm feelin' it.

I just downloaded doom 95, and for some reason all the
colors keep going insane! it's cool for a minute, but then
it basically just gets annoying, although not unplayable...
anyone know why this might be happening? I took some
screens, but the colors aren't coming out nearly as vibrant
as they are in the game. In game its like
red/pink/green/blue eveywhere...

ok well it got to the point that the colors would switch
between two sets every time I fired a gun, so this is
basically just un-fucking-playable. Glad that I can't even
enjoy Doom on a computer that has at least 100 times the
system requirements.

When I was playing doom most of the graphics calculations
were made by the cpu. The video cards back then had nothing
to do with acceleration they just adjusted the resolution to
svga and colours to hi-colour or something. You misread my
post. I was just whinning like an old bitch about how crappy
geforce cards are.

"revolution" came much later with 3dfx yadda yadda...

What OS are you using?

If it is xp then find the doom.exe, right click and make
sure that win 98 compatability is turned on in the
properties.

If this does not work then you can also try changing the
screen resolution before the game starts in the config
window.

lighting, 3d floors, water and a whole bunch of other
stuff.. like 32-player multiplayer (i think its 32)..

blake stone was the shit! I had the first episode (Blake

5.

Jazembo: I checked the compatibility thing because I totally
forgot to do and it worked. :) I've got it set to run at
640x480 fullscreen in the launcher, but if it didn't work at
that res I was just going to say fuck it because I have
serious qualms about playing any game at a resolution lower
than that. =P
