on saturday, i had 2 consecutive races. one was a mazda mx-3 (mutated jelly bean looking thing) and the other was an eagle talon. the talon is generation 2 or whatever the rounder smooth ones are. it is front wheel drive, but turboed. it is not modded. the mx-3 has at least exhaust and/or muffler. i do not know if it's the standard 4 cyclinder or optional 6 cylinder. my car is a porsche 951. for mods and info, look on my other recent story "951 vs. 5.0 GT." i raced the mx-3 first. i came down from north mesa to the stop sign at the roundabout. as i stopped, the blue mx-3 went through the roundabout, heading out towards the golf course (where all my races seem to take place) typically this guy already drives obnoxiously and exceedingly fast. i've messed around with him once or twice, so i figured he be up for a race. the roundabout opens up and i go, heading down a very slight hill. i take it up to about 60 mph, passing the mx-3. i slow down near the fire station and wait for him to take interest. he starts to catch up, so i downshift into third and give it gas around a bend that opens into the main straight away out by the golf course. i pass by the pro shop on the left and up a slight slope, not giving it too much throttle because i don't have my radar detector and you can't see what up ahead too much. i only get up to about 80-90 mph in this section and brake so i don't fly by "concerned" citizens and have them call the cops on us. the mx-3 is fairly far behind me and i get behind a truck before we come to 3 short rolling hills with a light up ahead. i see that the guy in the mx-3 is not slowing down, and i'm not going to allow him to fly by me and flash his hazards, so i downshift again, takeing off up the hills rather quickly until we get stopped by traffic. i'm in the left lane, he's behind me and there's a vehicle in front. light turns green and we plod along until i get an opening and shoot into the right lane as we get into a left bend (same one where i spun 270 degrees). i jolt ahead of the rest of the traffic and get back into the left lane, completely clear ahead. the guy in the mx-3 takes suit and gets in the right lane. i do a casual 60 through the bend as i watch him drop further and further back. i come out of the bend and get on the throttle a little because there's a street that you can't see people come out of and it dips down in a few hundred feet down the road, not allowing you to see what's ahead until you get to the crest of the hill. everything is clear and the road turns into a staightaway for about 1000 feet. i take it up to about 90 mph and then brake at the end of the straight as it starts to curve to the left, then come to an intersection where the light is red. i get the right lane with no one in front. the guy in the mx-3 is coming up from behind and i see him jolt sideways a little as he locks his brakes so he can slow. i've raced him at this light before and completely walked him once, but he was behind me, so there's no real competition. light turns green and i get on the gas, getting a little skewed to the left as i spin my tires. i look back and he's way back there. he doesn't bother to try anything again until i cruise a little and turn left through an intersection that goes on to Diamond Drive. this is a fairly straight street too. i get back into the traffic flow and wait for the mx-3 to catch up. it takes him a while, but he tries to charge up my rear end. i throw it down into 3rd and fly past my house and the police station at around 80-90 mph (smart, isn't it?) i keep up the pace through town until i start to come to another red light, but he turns behind me to go into Sonic. i head out to the edge of town, turn around and end up driving through the Sonic parking lot just to try to get a reaction out of him. nothing though. easy race, but he was relentless. as i come out of Sonic, the eagle talon drives by in front. i get on the gas and break the back end loose as i turn, sliding into my lane rather nicely. i pass him down the road and hang out in front in hopes of getting him to come after me. he doesn't bite, but follows me through traffic. i'm now headed back the way i just came. finally, we get stopped at a red light on Conoco hill, where it goes down the 3 rolling hills and into the golf course. i'm in the left lane, he's in the right. i prefer the left lane here becomes it's furthest away from the streets and the hills curve right slightly. he's inching his way through the intersection, maybe about half a car's length ahead. i bring up my rpm's . the light turns green and we're off with him ahead for about that half car length he had while we waited. soon as my turbo began to spool though. i flew by and by the time we were at the bottom of the hills, he was a street back. i guess he gave up after about 1st gear. he stayed behind throughout the golfcourse until we passed the proshop. he started to speed up as do i. i go up to around 80-90 and slow for the roundabout, maybe even more than necessary just so he can catch up. i go left up a curving left hill, followed by a good right turn. i take it up to around 60-70 on the hill and get down to about 50 mph for the right turn, then get on the brakes because the speed limit is 30 and i always do the speed limit in neighborhoods. he didn't put up much of a fight on the hill. i saw him start to take the hill with speed in my rearview mirror. after that he tailgated me for a while. down the road there is a sharp right bend, so i tap the brakes quickly and zip around it, but he falls back some, and then starts to tailgate me once more. the road lines break into dotted ones, enabling people to pass on the road. i put it into 2nd and hold down the clutch so i can gas it if he decides to pass. he stays behind until he turns right to go to his house. i just cruise down the road going around the loop that circles one of the schools and i headed home. |
