Damn! i've got some new speakers (audiopro focus sa-5), and instead of bass, they make a muddled booming kind of sound... my room is quite small, but when I moved them to a bigger room, the bass went away. Anyone know something about this stuff?

got them on spikes.
i've checked the connections and the elements are perfectly fine. i THINK it is the room-size, but there should be some way to adjust it.

when i lived in the dorms my speakers would really resonate like crazy to track #2 on only built 4 cuban lynx. i think that tone just happend to be the exact resonant frequency of my dorm room.
does it do it with every bass heavy song, or only one specific frequency?

well.. when I play my synth, i HAVE noticed specific rumbling around the low F's when playing bass. But it rumbles on pretty much of the bass (not all, though). I think the most resonance probably lies around the F area.

but how can i "dampen" it if it is the acoustics? the speakers have their bass-resonance-hole directed towards the floor... they have won tests for best sound, including best deep-bass(for their price-class, of course).

iDunno.
i guess you've tried moving the speakers around to different places?..
other than that, you could maybe try some of that sound dampening material... but that'd probably make things quieter.
maybe tear down a wall. :)
i'm sure there are better solutions, but, i don't know them.

sound-dampening material? you mean I should cover the inner walls of my room with the stuff they use in studios?

i have B&W DM603 S2's which are large floorstanders they have 2 bass ports (1 at front, 1 at back) and come supplied with 2 grades of sponge plugs for the bass ports, 1 is coarse, 1 is fine.
you can run then without any sponge plugs or with either of the plugs, the former gives the most bass which can be boomy in a small room. i have a small room and use the fine plugs which reduce the bass the most.
if you are in a large room and your bass ports are NOT plugged at all, and you want more bass, try moving the speakers closer to the wall
also ask yourself the question, are you wanting the correct level of bass, or an extra bassy sound?

I hope the "dampening" that was mentioned wasnt meant to tell you to dampen the speaker, such as with polyfill. cause that wont solve your problem.
It sounds like the speakers are under powered. or the reciever/amplifier you have (no offense) isnt the best.
I hate to ask this, because i dont want to make you feel stupid, but did you check your EQ settings?

the reciever is the Yamaha RXV-440. The speakers aren't overpowered, it is the room which have the wrong dimensions. It turns out the room is one big box of resonance appropriate for bass. The problem isn't too much bass, there is no bass, but LOADS of resonance.

no, not over powered. UNDER. well you said the bass sounded muddled. that is generally a sign of a speaker being UNDER powered.
Is your room not carpeted? if not, you can pull out the polyfill in the speaker to make the sound less boomy. polyfill makes the speaker act like its in a bigger box, ie more bass.
try it. if it doesnt help stick it back in, and i would exchange them for a speaker thats acoustically matched for a "hall".

the speakers.
i sent a mail to them, and asked about this. they said that the rooms dimensions made the bass resonate. it isn't really muddled, as all the other sounds shine clearly through, it is more "booming" without actually being bass.
no underpowering, neither. the speakers work from 25w to 220w. The Yamaha delivers 65w on all channels.

as far as power goes, you are fine. although i like to stick to the top of the power band personally.
I bet if you pull out the polyfill it'll sound better. maybe not exactly perfect, but better.

where do i find the polyfill? the speakers have an immensely large bass-hole that goes from the top, and all the way down to the floor.
what does the polyfill do?

you will have to unscrew one (or more) of the woofers to get to it. its nothing more than cotton and polyester.
It trapps bass inside the box and expands it, and the result is the illusion of more bass, every speaker has it.
For home use, kind of need it so you DONT get the boomy sound, you'll get a nice tight bass not. but since the speakers arent agreeing with the location, you might benefit from removing it.

so i'll actually have to open the speakers up?
...
not too sure I want to do that, as I've just bought them, and the "warranty may be void" if some seal is removed.

yep.
I asked some guy at the store where I bought the speakers yesterday, but he gave me so many mixed signals. either my room was too soft, or it was too hard, as I described it. the problem is that two of the walls are normal in-the-house-walls, and one is a concrete wall and one is a "outside" wall harder than the inside-walls, but softer than the concrete one. the floor and roof are hard (concrete, probably), but they both have rooms on the other side. He said I should EITHER put the speakers on something hard, OR on something soft. I tried putting them on carpets, and plugging the hole with some towels. I tried hanging carpets on the walls, and i tried putting a wood-plate (table-plate) in some of the corners of my room. There was SOME difference, but not much.
the speakers come with some specially designed spikes, which also have some rubber-pads they can stand in if you don't want to damage the floor. I've tried both with and without the rubber-thingies, but they make no difference.

what happened when you put towels in the bass ports? that's quite drastic as it effectively completely blocks the port
the sponge plugs that come with mine only partially block the ports.
i definately suggest you DON'T start taking the drivers out and removing wadding.
