i hate music

hevquip from 45 angry wasps throats on 2001-12-11 17:08 [#00059887]

generally, i do. music today contributes nothing. it has no
historic roots and does nothing to advance us culturally.
it's a reflection of the entertainment mediums. something
like flamenco or african song and dance has much more
meaning and use than britney spears, limp bizkit, or
even...aphex twin. music now is a result of marketing, not
the struggle or success of a culture or country or people.
it's a reflection of society, not culture.

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-11 17:10 [#00059890]

I hate flamenco and African song. I hate anything that is
''traditional''. Guys like Aphex and the Beatles, that
advance their specific genres with every release, we need
more of them.

hevquip from 45 angry wasps throats on 2001-12-11 17:13 [#00059894]

they may advance a music genre, but they don't advance
culture and will have no place in history as being anything
but musicians.

Mutant Death Pengwin from Medicine Hat on 2001-12-11 17:15 [#00059897]

i think music stopped advancing us culturally in the late
60's. well, maybe rap in the 80's did some culturral
advancement, but none too much.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-11 17:19 [#00059899]

why does music have to do anything but be... music? It's
music, and I at least enjoy it for what it is... I don't
give a shit if it advances our culture, or changes the
world... who gives a shit... when I'm home, with my
headphones on listening to music, I enjoy it... and that's
all that matters!!!

Mutant Death Pengwin from Medicine Hat on 2001-12-11 17:25 [#00059902]

i think it would be great to be a part of cultural
advancement by music! it would be truly wonderful to know
the the music that i love is changing the world as i listen!

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-11 17:34 [#00059907]

THE BEATLES DIDN'T ADVANCE CULTURE? What? They ARE culture.
They started countless trends, musical, fashion, hair, and
all these last till this day. They changed the fuckin'
world!!!!

hevquip from 45 angry wasps throats on 2001-12-11 17:35 [#00059908]

yes, i'd have to say rap was one of the last music and
cultural advances.

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-11 17:35 [#00059909]

But most of all, it WAS about the music, and the that's all
they set out to do. But they were so good, they changed
everything else in the process. First music videos, which
are HUGE cultural images nowadays.

hevquip from 45 angry wasps throats on 2001-12-11 17:44 [#00059914]

yeah, but music videos aren't making us better people. i
think that the majority of music is not representitive of a
country or culture. it's not like we're going to be singing
britney spears songs (or anyone elses) 1500 years from now
and dancing like her. something like an african tribe has
their cultural dances and songs that have histories and
meaning and relevance to the tribe, purposes and tell
stories and is part of their heritage. in that sense, music
is and dance is storytelling and passing on history by other
means of oral dictation. i'm complaining because music is
not like that anymore.

Mutant Death Pengwin from Medicine Hat on 2001-12-11 17:47 [#00059915]

so basically your saying all music is good for is
entertainment?

Dirtypriest from Denmark on 2001-12-11 17:49 [#00059916]

You´re saying something is bad because it doesnt affect
culture?? i dont get it.

music is our spiritual guides through life

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-11 17:50 [#00059917]

The only culture is MY culture. My personal universe. If the
Beatles make ME better, that's good enough for me. The rest
of the fucks on earth don't and SHOULDN'T matter.

1010-1111-10 from St.John\\\\\\'s Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-11 18:08 [#00059925]

YES EXACTLY!

Music doesnt affect the masses but if you can listen to a
song and feel happy or sad or excited because of it then it
has meaning!

Contour Regard from window sill on 2001-12-11 18:38 [#00059948]

hevquip, you should really quit thinking. if you have
nothing better to do than to contemplate how the african
mating dance is so much better than aphex twin, you should
find a new hobby. i'm sorry that our culture doesn't
revolve around harvest dances and fertility music anymore
considering we've become more sophisticated as a society.
listen to the music, enjoy the music, because it's just
music.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-11 18:56 [#00059956]

no, music can change each of us personally... theres another
topic on here, about the music that changed us or
something... like for me Radiohead opened up my mind to a
lot of things... but why does it have to change everyone,
effect the whole culture? I love music because I seriously
feel that I learn about myself and the world from listening
to it, and because it's entertaining... so it does effect
me, and change me...

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-11 18:59 [#00059958]

the reason music changed and effected culture in the past
was because it touched people on a personal level, but a lot
of people... the Beatles reached huge amounts of people, and
they still do, with their messages of love, and all that...
I just think that now, there is so much music out there,
that's it's really hard for one type to have such a huge
effect on people, because people like everything...

hevquip from 45.697 bits of electricity on 2001-12-11 19:06 [#00059961]

you guys aren't understanding the degradation of music...

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-11 19:09 [#00059963]

Music sucks now. I understand. You just said that The
Beatles didn't change culture and make it better, and I HATE
IT WHEN PEOPLE REFUSE TO WORSHIP THEM! :-p

Narkotic from Orange County, California, USA on 2001-12-11 19:15 [#00059965]

the beatles suck

:)

The Lover on 2001-12-11 19:16 [#00059966]

CATPENIS\:::

thx.

Narkotic from Orange County, California, USA on 2001-12-11 19:24 [#00059968]

your cunning attempt to be witty and cool didn't work, nor
are you very funny

Scary Bear on 2001-12-11 19:25 [#00059969]

hevquip: If people don't understand then you're not
expressing youself propperly. What exactly do you mean? I
can take what you're saying from a completely different
angle and agree with you, but I sure as fuck don't hate
music. You can't be saying that all music has no meaning
because if you were then you would be a twat. I know you're
not saying that African ribal is better than the Aphex Twin.
From the point of view of an alien looking down on earth it
would probably firstly notice the mass advertisement of crap
soulless music and MTV pumping crap into people's ears
everywhere they walk in town should they be unwise enough to
leave home without some good tunes and headphones. (In fact,
the alien would probably not land but this is besides the
point)

You are in title to your own opinion at the end of the day.
Does it really matterb if people don't agree with you?

Bogus on 2001-12-11 19:47 [#00059984]

hev you're talking like if music isn't a big part of culture
and subculture

Taxiderm on 2001-12-11 19:55 [#00059987]

I am kind of bored, so I will spend this time leisurely
poking holes in your shoddy argument.

Here we go;

generally, i do. music today contributes nothing. it has no
historic roots and does nothing to advance us culturally.
it's a reflection of the entertainment mediums. something
like flamenco or african song and dance has much more
meaning and use than britney spears, limp bizkit, or
even...aphex twin. music now is a result of marketing,
not the struggle or success of a culture or country or
people. it's a reflection of society, not culture.

a-contemporary music has usually never apeared to contribute
anything. 90% of the time it has been crappy love songs.
b-you don't think there has been a saturation in the world
music market? You are sadly mistaken. THat shit is pumped
out just as much as IDM (if not more... the IDM section is
usually much smaller than the wanky ambient and worldbeat
section)
c-not every artist does this shit for their expanding bank
accounts. Look at some of the smaller labels like m3rck if
you want to find some stuff that is less corrupted than afx,
britney spears or limp bizkit.
d-the society you are participating in that this music is
reflective of is an adequite representation of your culture
at the time that it is produced. Why do you think the
classic artists stick out from the rest? Because they are
that rare one or two that stick out from the hundreds.

I am tired. I hope that all made sence. I just wish people
whould stop looking at things, expecting history to be made
by these silly current events and then getting jaded by the
fact that it doesn't.

hevquip from 45.697 bits of electricity on 2001-12-11 20:02 [#00059988]

music = poo

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-11 20:05 [#00059990]

LOL!

Mutant Death Pengwin from Medicine Hat on 2001-12-11 20:58 [#00060002]

i am sad hevquip, that you cant accept music for what it is
intended: entertainment. you are the only person who feels
that music should be of culturral value. but its sole
purpose if for entertainment. it always has. when music was
culturaly changing, that was a side product. without the
entertainment no one would and there would be no cultural
change. the purpose of music IS to ENTERTAIN, and as i
said, cultural change is simply a by product. maybe we are
too lazy or don't care to have the music change us
culturally.
there are many bands that try to change us culturraly but
we dont care. you have to face the facts, you make the
music do what you want. thats how it is and thats how it is
allways going to be.
if you want to change the world join rage against the
machine and you can free tibet, feed the poor, and get rid
of corruption. but you will be the only one because no else
cares enough to do anything.
so, you can start the revolution now or wait till someelse
does and join the herd.
till then i am going to be enjoying my music for its face
value: entertainment.

fuck these musicians on 2001-12-11 21:01 [#00060005]

I hate music too. But only because mine is so inferior. Fuck
these musicians.

Music is the best thing that ever happened to me.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-12 03:49 [#00060140]

hevquip, I don't get your point... could you dumb it down a
bit...
