He beat out favourites Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp for
the honors - I think he deserves it. Your thoughts?

Oh and Lost in Translation won Comedy of the Year btw.

Murray won Best Actor, and director/writer Sophia Coppola
took home a couple of awards herself. It was funny, because
she seemed so cutely shy when accepting her award.

What REALLY surprised me though was Lord of the Rings: RTOTK
taking home Best Drama. I mean i love LOTR but usually most
award shows don't credit such fantasy material.

surprising that 'the office' picked up 2 golden globes in an
american awards ceremony, considering its only broadcast on
a relatively small cable channel.

lost in translation is very funny - but like most things in
that film, its all about subtlety.
some people actually walked out of the cinema i saw it in..
not sure what they were expecting really - but they
obviously didnt get it.
i loved the film though.
bill murray was excellent in it.
sophia coppola seems to be a very talented woman. two highly
acclaimed films already.

that's what i mean. how is it possible to pick two such
different film like lost in translation and lotr on the
other hand?
lost in translation is here considered a non mainstream film
and it has a totally different audience that lets say lotr.

thing is, you can use that line of arguement against
virtually all film/music awards ceremonies.
it does stand to reason that, if two films or two albums are
stylistically different, they are beyond comparison.
but you cant really have an award/awards ceremony for every
different genre of film.. it sort of defeats the object. and
besides, there arent enough films released in each
particular genre to qualify this kind of generic
segregation.

i know thats a really obvious/anal arguement. and i do agree
with you that both those films are so far apart they have
nothing in common other than theyre both films.. but my
opinion is that all awards ceremonies (whatever theyre for)
are more about the industry/business/publicity/recognition
than they are about art/artistic integrity.

hmm, if you check what kind of films get in competition on
european festivals, like cannes, venice, berlin, roterdam,
karlovy vary,...you can see that they don't ever pick
commercial films, not because they weren't good, but because
they were filmed for totally different audience. i think
they only pick independant films for this festivals.

"there arent enough films released in each
particular genre to qualify this kind of generic
segregation"

you'd be surprised how many independeant films are filmed
every year.
my guess why they pick such "artsy"(not too fond of this
term, im just using it so we know what im talking about
hehe) films for this kind of competitions is to give the
awards a more serious appearence. it's only my opinion
ofcourse.

thing is, with lord of the rings.. its a tough one.
yes it s a massive special fx film - but thats not the sole
selling point of the film. its based on a highly celebrated
english literary work. made by a new zealand-based crew..
and though they couldnt have done it without new-line's
money : their approach to the film making process appears to
have been.. pretty.. amateur is the wrong word.. but it
wasnt the typical hollywood production-line big budget film
project.
if you see what i mean..

(im not sure i do any more)

i shouldn't be really debating this as i haven't seen any of
lotr films. i know for sure tho that it has never been
picked for competition in european festivals, which is kind
of weird actually cuz they have no problems with selecting
asian fantasy martial arts films...judging on this i'd say
that the only criteria is apperantly the money behind the
film...

im not sure either :)

There was a show on IFC about the filming of 'who killed Don
Quixote" by Terry Gilliam..

Looked like it was going to be really good. Shame it didn't
work out
