i have first two songs. excellent. imagine mature, not so
angry, more mellow standards type of sound. track 2 has
female vocals. wait for more

its interesting in that its mellow. they sound like they
are getting old. one song has a bunch low analog synth
though-which is nice. reminds me more of tnt than
standards. but not nearly as good as standards.

i didnt really like it. sounds too dry for my taste.

standards was exactly what i like about them in concentrated
form.

hah, i can almost agree with that. seriously, this and tnt
blow as far as im concerned.

nothing has even come CLOSE to standards for me

I really, really disliked TNT.

I think Standards is okay.

Millions Now Living Will Never Die is where it's at!

why can't anyone appreciate both TNT and Standards? they're
both excellent...

i abhor the production on tnt.

the material is alright, but the production is DEAD.

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2004-02-24 23:50 [#01088152]
Points: 5437 Status: Regular

what in specific? the tinky winky electronics that pop-up
into the mix every now and then, or just the general sound
of the album in general?

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2004-02-24 23:54 [#01088157]
Points: 10513 Status: Lurker

it sounds very washed out and dry, kinda like the new one.

the sounds themselves are very supressed sounding, liek they
didnt normalise the tracks or compress them at all.

sounds limp.

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2004-02-24 23:58 [#01088161]
Points: 5437 Status: Regular

yeah... i can kind of see that at points... there are some
spots where they could've let the textures hang out a bit
more... but there are some really, really beautiful sunny
moments on there that i will always cherish... ultimately, i
prefer standards... (which is funny, because it took me a
long time to get into standards)

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2004-02-25 00:17 [#01088170]

like i said, there material has its moments... but that
production man...

the only track i think the prduction works on is igazu
falls, that track KILLS

i always thought that tortoise sucked, i bought the album
with the US flag on it, i can't even remember what it was
called...

i gave it one listen and put it aside, not my idea of
"good"

i found them to be very boring

well it's official, i have songs from the new tortoise album
stuck in my head... so it must be decent at the very
least... i'm still not really feelin' the first few tracks,
but after that, it picks up quite nicely....

They just got in a load of Thrill Jockey at eMusic. So far
they don't have the new Tortoise, but I'm downloading
everything else.

Why do so many people hate TNT? I think it's really good.
Too conventional sounding?

HOLY SHIT.. . ok Tibbar you need some new ears by the sounds
of it.. . TnT has quite simply the best production youll
ever hear.. . and no this is not a matter of opinion (: TnT
on cd is a 24bit HDCD if your listening on mp3 Id have more
reason to believe you but if youve got the cd and listen on
your computer (if your cdrom is hooked up for digital) and
have a halfway decent pair of headphones it is the best
thing ever.. . TnT is still my favourite Tortoise album
though I love them all.. . second being Standards and the
new one is growing on me. ..

on the new one I find that the track with vocals is actually
umong the worst on that album.. . it starts getting really
good after track 2. ..

it's not about whether the production is "quality hifi"
perse, it's a matter of opinion as to whether or not the
highly produced feel of the album was the right choice to
convey the pieces... i can definitely see where he's coming
from in that it does sound a little overly wonky and stiff
(what wonky means... i have no clue, but it was the first
word that jumped into my head), whereas something like
Standards (from the very opening notes) feels a lot more
raw, vibrant, energetic, honest, uncontrived, etc.

what's dubstep lol

after 3 listens: good album. even very good in places - a
bit less serious and rigid than "it's all around you"

looking at the tracklist i thought "many short tracks,
good". but now i think i like the longest tracks best, i.e.
01 and 04. heh

initial thoughts? really like the 1st 20 seconds of
Penumbra. The rest of it doesn't really sound hugely
exciting to me. . . a pretty straight follow on from their
last two albums-all tortoise elements in check.

but I'm at the stage where i've probably listened to too
much music and have completely ruined my brain so pinch of
salt eh? I'd love to catch some of the rockier tunes live. .
.

Just got back from seeing them play. 2 encores, it was
excellent. Beautiful, tight, crisp, loud.. so much better
than I expected. Even got to pick up a copy of Standards, a
splendid album I'd been meaning to buy for years...

Can't vouch for the new album but the tracks they played
from it were great. As my cousin pointed out tonight, "it's
like metal and easy listening at the same time".

I saw them live once.

Really good- hope your performance is as fun as mine was. It
was truly cool to see all them glockenspiels and/ or
xylophones or whatnot.

Also, this woman writing for the Guardian asked me after the
gig what the song names were, cos she got given a set list
by the band but they only had th first three letters of each
song they played, haha! :D Good old cryptic Tortoise. :) I
couldn't remember all the song names either, hehe...

Where are you seeing them? I wanna see them too!

Oh yeah, SOuthbank Centre and at ATP Minehead.

Listening to new album on official site. Not massively
excited, but Tortoise has never been a band with accessible
musics. This will take a while to sink in. I will DL full
album soon.

for track 2. that shit is awesome.

I've seen them already, in 2004, that show was immense. I
was amazed with the way they could easily exchange
instruments, almost from track to track. The other thing was
2 drumsets - perfect idea. I met Dan Bitney earlier that day
outside the venue, introduced him to my g/f and handed him a
cd-r of my music - with an old email address written on it,
lol. I sometimes wonder how much fun they had listening to
my old shitty tracks on the tour bus. If, of course, they
did.

And in December - I hope that they will play for 3 hours and
the first hour will be filled with tracks from new album :P
Cause I really enjoy it.
